Can Convoy s21d take protected cells?

If so is there a limit on the length? Can keep power, orbtronic cells fit?

Thanks

No, I wouldn’t even put unprotected button tops in there. Flat unprotected only.

There is no need since it has LVP. Also, not many protected cell can provide 8A continuous output. It might trip the protection circuit.

The correct answer to the question – “Can Convoy s21d take protected cells?” is YES. I tested it a few minutes ago.

However, as FunkyRider86 implied, you may not want to.

If you do want to use a protected cell, you have to be careful about the size of the cell. My test was with a protected 18650 cell, with a band around it to add a couple millimeters of width, so it would fit properly in the S21D’s battery tube. As protected 18650 batteries are longer than 65mm (due to the protection circuit and the button top that protected batteries have), length was not an issue in a flashlight that normally takes 21700s. But if you have a protected 21700 cell, it will be longer than 70mm, and therefore may not fit properly.

Also, the S21D is available with either an 8 amp or a 12 amp driver. Many protected cells will work fine with a max draw of 8 amps, but not with 12 amps. My S21D has the 8 amp driver, so mine worked fine at 100% with a Panasonic/Sanyo NCR18650GA, which is rated for up to 10 amps draw. But the 12 amp driver would likely trip the protection circuit with the flashlight running at 100%

You confused me

I’m not worried about the max output I care about the 280 lm mode

I prefer using protected cells

I wanted to know if it can use protected 21700s

Protected cells are typically unprotected cells re-wrapped with a protection circuit added inside the wrap. This makes them longer by a few mm. I don’t know if a protected 21700 will be too long for the S21D, and I don’t have a protected 21700 cell to test with.

Okay, here’s what I did. I put a couple of 2 mm spacers into the S21D along with a regular unprotected 21700 battery, and it worked fine. The battery plus spacers works out to about 74 mm, which is about the same size as a protected 21700 cell. So I suspect that a protected 21700 would work fine.

Even though you don’t plan to use the light at 100%, I would still recommend picking the 8A driver (if you haven’t already purchased the light) and picking a protected cell that’s rated for 10A or more of continuous discharge.
