I’ve been looking at this driver and found a few say it only puts out 2.6a at best. I was thinking of mounting an MKR on copper and driving the crap out of it with this driver on 4s lion. Specs say it’s only good for 3*xml which is a bit lower vf than an MKR. Could I use it? Will it handle the higher vf of an MKR?
Hi,
According to this:
http://www.cree.com/LED-Components-and-Modules/Products/XLamp/Arrays-Directional/XLamp-MKR
The 12V version of the MK-R is spec’ed for maximum 1.25 amps @ 12.5V, and the LD-33 is spec’ed for 2.6 amps on high, so wouldn’t you be over-driving the MK-R? Or, is that (over-driving the MK-R) what you meant when you said “driving the crap out of it”?
The LD-33 is a buck driver, so it seems like with 4xLi-ion, it should work, since the Vf would be less than the 4xLi-ion voltage.
Yes, I mean i want to over drive it.
That’s what I was thinking but I just wanted someone to double check me, thanks H)
It really depends on what buck controller the driver uses. Some have a max output voltage limit unrelated to input voltage (LD-36 is fine with up to 16v input, but won't output more than around 4v), and some don't and will output up to within ~1-1.5v of whatever input voltage is.
I don’t know if you’ll be able to find an answer unless you try it yourself, or unless someone here has. I think I know what you’re wondering about , and I’ve kind of asked something similar in the past, but about different boost drivers. It seems like, for boost and buck drivers, the vendors usually don’t specify the output voltages that the drivers can work with.
As I said, I’ve mostly been more interested in boost drivers, and for example, I had asked about whether a boost driver I was looking at could handle ‘x’ output voltage, but couldn’t get a real answer. Realistically, I can understand that for a given boost driver, it can’t output infinite voltage, but it would be helpful if the vendors provided information on the maximum output voltage.
I guess that the situation with buck drivers may be a little less vague, because they should work if Vbat > Vf (emitters), but even with buck drivers, and for a given buck driver, is there a maximum output voltage? That’s not usually specified either :(…
So if you do test with the MK-R, post your results, for the record!!
I have the driver on hand but will need to order up the mkr so it will be a couple of weeks before I can try it out. Thanks guys.
I had did a test with the MKR and it wasn’t really successful. On 3s I got 0.05 amps to the led. On 4s I got 0.04 amps to the led. :~ I don’t know how to measure voltage going across the led and am reluctant to put the DMM straight to the driver. Guess I’ll have to find another driver. ![]()
