Charger help

Noob question, sorry. Can someone recommend a good, cheap, basic charger that works with Eneloop AAA batteries.

I am uk based.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

look for the package deal with 4x white Eneloop AAA that includes a charger

I would suggest the Vapcell S4 plus fast charger. It will charge at 3A on all 4 bays and give you a wide variety of options if you ever branch into other battery chemistries like lithium-ion 4.2 V.

How many slots do you need?

It’s not been updated for a while but HKJ website has a very useful table of tested chargers.

If two slots is sufficient, look at the Vapcell U2. I’ve got one and like it.

Very minor downsides for me:

1) the ‘complicated’ blinky lights- there’s multiple colours on the display to indicate chemistry and charging progress, I find it’s a bit Christmas tree-vibe. That said, you don’t have to change the settings, you can just put an NiMH (or 3.7v lithium) in, and it’ll just get on and charge it.

2) It’s not the most “premium” of units, some of my AAA cells need a slight nudge when putting them in the slots to make sure they make contact with the terminals.

3) limited to 0.5aH charge rate on NiMH.

Ya I have an 8 bay Gyrfalcon that I love but it maxes at 1 amp. sometimes I have a 5,000 mah 21700 that I want to charge quickly and that takes a long time. The Vapcell detects a max current of 3 amp for it

It would also my favorite but it´s not so cheap. And would not charge NiMH with 3A

A cheap and good charger for NiMH AA/AAA is the Opus BT-C700

I use the Vapcell S4 Plus, which can charge both NiMH and Li-ion. It is a good investment.

@Telemarkmike

A budget would be helpful

Ideally under £20

I don’t think I can get the Opus easily in the uk.

The reply above mentions that the Vapcell is not compatible with NiMH. Are you sure it’s compatible?

The reply below says that the Vapcell can charge NiNH. Are you sure that it cant?

I just bought a Nitecore UMS2 because it seems to have one of the longest charging bay lengths. That means it can do 21700 protected cells/ 21700 cells with built in charging. Maybe something to consider if you’re likely to branch off onto using lithium rechargeable batteries. There’s the UMS4 which is a 4 bay - I assume it can do the longer cells too? UMS2 Both do Ni-MH and Ni-Cd as well.

UMS4 Review of Nitecore UMS4

I’ve got a Nitecore SC4 I’ve had for years and it still works fine, but I had to mod it to fit unprotected 21700 cells and even then it’s a squeeze to fit them.

This is a good choice, just remember that some models of the chargers in this package with batteries are not independent 4-channel chargers, meaning, they have to be charged in pairs for it work.

Sorry I can’t remember the Charger’s exact model number that can charge 1 to 4 cells, independently.

The Vapcell is also a great NiMH-charger, I tested it with a lots of cells, also cheap and bad ones, it´s better in this that the most NiMH-only-chargers I have.

But it can´t charge NiMH @3A, that is what I mean. NiMH-charging is limited to 1A for each slot and it can´t charge size D cells.

If the Vapcell-price is OK for you I would highly recommend this charger

But it´s a big one with a big Power Supply

It can charge up to 77.8mm. It´s a 4-Slot(!)-version of the UMS2. UM2/UM4 have the same size but lower charge currents

The weakest point is the Slot-sharing, for me it´s more a 2-Slot-charger. For most cells I would prefer the Vapcell S4+. No slot-sharing, much better display, much more features (the UMS4 can only charge), more reliable for NiMH.

I have a couple of Vapcell S4 plus chargers.

It's a great charger for just about anything except D batteries and 26800 cells (both of which don't fit).

If all you want to charge is AAA batteries, it's a bit overkill, but if you ever plan on getting other types of batteries, it's really tough to beat.

...

If you want to perhaps save a little money and still get a universal charger, the Nitecore UM2/UMS2/UM4/UMS4 are pretty good.

I have had a lot of Nitecore chargers, including the UM4, and they're decent for the money.

The Vapcell is nicer and charges more quickly, but is more expensive.

Yes, the Vapcell S4 Plus definitely doesn’t fit the “basic”, or the “cheap” prerequisites.

Just fyi, wurkkos.com sell the Vapcell S4 Plus for 34 USD, presently.

What is “Cheap”?

I have a bunch of chargers and the Vapcell is still the best abng for the buck IMHO

My cheaper ones like Nitecore UMS4, Xtar VC4SL, Opus BT-C3100 etc. aren´t so good as the Vapcell
