Charging 18650 Li battery with NiCd/NiMH charger – is it safe?

I bought a Nitecore EC2 from another forum member, which came with a 18650 Hi-Max 2600 mah protected Li-Ion battery. I already own a pretty good charger, a La Crosse BC1000, which I use for charging my Eneloops. I’m wondering if it’s safe to use the BC1000 to charge an 18650 battery, or if I need to buy yet another battery charger?

No!!! Not safe, it will not work because the voltages are different. I will say this again Do Not Do That!!!

I don’t think it’s a good idea, get a dedicated Li-Ion charger, there are plenty good ones even on a budget

It is not a good idea! I will say again to make sure this is clear. Do Not Do That!!!

Got it, thanks. Any recommendations for a solid Li-Ion charger would be appreciated, too

The nitecore intellicharge I4 is a good reliable charger for around 25 dollars.

Scaru is trying to give you a hint, or maybe a suggestion that…………………………

IT IS NOT SAFE, NO WAY NO HOW, NOT IN A MILLION FRICKIN’ YEARS COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, BECAUSE YOU’LL BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE, YOUR NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE, YOUR CAR, YOUR CAT, THE ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD, THE ENTIRE DAMN TOWN, ALONG WITH PROBABLY THE ENTIRE DAMN STATE IF NOT THE ENTIRE DAMN UNITED STATES, CANADA, AND PARTS OF MEXICO.

So yes, I think it’s prolly a good idea to follow his advice. This is assuming I’m reading him correctly here. You might want to send him a PM to confirm that though.

:open_mouth:

I doubt it would do much. It would probably just kill the charger or something. Unsure though. Only one way to find out.

The above is really stupid but sometimes scaru get's carried away...

a phone number where we can reach your next of kin.

:open_mouth:

An ambulance is on the way. ;)

And he recommends a charger that does ... ironic

Not that there’s anything wrong with that… J)

Well, the Western Hemisphere can rest easy tonight! The good news is that an 18650 is not even going to fit into a charger made for AA/AAA NiMH batteries. The 18650 is simply WAY too long and thick.

It doesn’t fit anyway, and even if it did nothing would happen since li-on empty V is higher than nimh full.

Still, it could damage the charger, as NiCD/NiMH chargers wouldn’t normally expect a voltage over 1.5V.

This. I tried, it thought it was fully charged and never kicked on. It simply won’t work. If the li-on cell was below 1.5v then something might happen but I didn’t try that.

Highly unlikely given it’s still fairly low DC voltage on par with what it expects.

can the thread title be changed to say that it’s not safe?
