Newby here with a question. I have a Maglite XL150 that I’m pleased with but I need a couple more lights. Are there any good cheapos that provide the same performance in the same size package?
Welcome to BLF!
Cant help you really, but sure others will chime in pretty fast!
Couldn't find the XL150 model, but can probably guess. And what price range do you mean? ~20$? or less than ~50$ (USD)? My default "cheapo" is the Nitecore MT1A, it's a 2XAA at 300+ lumen for ~$35 USD but it's a little longer. I don't buy the 3XAAA lights anymore and they don't always stand the test of time. That said I've seen the LUXPRO around and you might their TAC600 4XAAA at ~300 lumen (http://www.amazon.com/LUXPRO-Lumens-Extreme-Flashlight-Black/dp/B00CZE66C0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460220034&sr=8-1&keywords=lux+flashlight) Happy Hunting and welcome to BLF!
Well, maybe my Maglite is out of production (it’s 4-5 yrs old). It’s a 3AA Led about 5”L X 1”D. but it provides good light and has been reliable. I was hoping to find an eBay cheapo for less than $10.
I don’t think there is an XL150. There is an XL100 and an XL50. These are quite nice mass market lights. But in performance terms a little out gunned by today’s offerings.
There are lots of great budget lights available. Although many run on li-ion. If you want to stick to regular batteries then choices are a little more limited.
If are sticking with AA or AAA batteries make sure you either use low self discharge NiMh rechargeable a like Sanyo Eneloops. Or lithium primaries like Engergizer Lithium. Don’t use alkaline batteries, they are rubbish. They leak and generally perform badly in flashlights.
If you want a cheap light. Look on eBay for sk68. These vary in quality, but as a rule they are good value for money. And very cheap.
There are also some really nice single AAA lights too. These won’t offer the run time or throw of the XL Mag. But are great little pocket lights.

There are budget lights that run on 3xAAA but you may find a 2AA light to be more affective.
The only 3AA
Maglite that I’m aware of was an LED MiniMag. I’ve owned a few but I think they quit making them.
There are very few budget 3AA lights.
You would have better luck finding something in a 2AA configuration.
The choices open up dramatically if you are ok with rechargeable 18650 batteries.
