compact, throwy and low CCT (warm) light?

hi,
that question does not come up very often since people are happy with their throwy white led lights.

i am looking for something similar to my s21d but that could throw.
convoy s21d has 2700k led, it is dedomed, use 60 degree TIR and 8a buck driver. it get intense enough to be useful at around 10-20m max and could slightly light stuff up to 50m away (well, that is not very useful).

i originally rounded up my search to convoy s16 and convoy m21b but prefer s16 since it share threads (could lego) with s21d.
led emitter of choice originally was CULPM1.TG but after testing that led locally in completely different flashlight i decide that white/cold led is not my cup of tea.

is there something that:

  • use 21700 battery
  • compact like s21d
  • analog button top
  • could throw 100m or more with really intense and bright light
  • very warm/low CCT like 2700k~3000k or lower?

maybe i need to reduce my expectations for throw distance?

thanks

Did you try the 10 degree clear optics on S21D? It improves the throw quite a bit. You can buy the 4 pack optics from Convoy store for a couple of bucks. A lot cheaper than buying a new light.

thanks, i didn’t tried it yet.

i plan to make an order soon and include that TIR lens in there.

i’d prefer separate/dedicated light for that throw if possible.

Convoy M21B mod to XHP50.3 HI 27000K

One of M21 versions with GT FC40?
Can go as low as 1800-2000K if you wish, though with emitter like this you will get a lot less light.

thanks,

what if i don’t really want to sacrifice much light to get throw?

maybe something with large and throwy emitter?
m21b has XHP70.3 that go as low as 3000k but not sure how that would fare.

or maybe multiple throwy emitters?
sadly neither s12 or s21d has throwy emitters. there is difference in optics between s21d and s12 so maybe triple dedomed 519a 2700k (or maybe sst20 2700k?) on s12 would throw further and still have a lot of light?

Is the Sofirn C8F throwy enough for your needs?

thanks, i think that c8f could be enough but it does not have warm leds from what i find. and that light would be too big and too heavy.

s21d is half weight of sofirn c8f and is much more compact.

i also don’t really like that two switch buttons with green led of side switch.

I know it’s not using the 21700 format, but what about the Emisar D1 mini pocket thrower using the 3000k XHP70.3 HI option? Fairly small throwy light

Well, with your requirements you are sacrificing lumen output either way. Lower CCT means lower efficiency. High CRI means lower efficiency too. And “throwy” emitters often have a bit lower output.

Also with “compact” and 21700 requirements you are setting pretty specific limit on how much power can be used.

In the end everything depends on what you priorities are, there will be compromises…

I still think you can get away with M21 as a host with emitter of your choice. Between M21 versions bigger head will mean better throw, but obviously might conflict with “compact” requirement. Smaller ones are fairly compact. For emitters - GT FC40 for high CRI with very warm CCT possible, or may be XHP70.3 Hi 3000K for more light at a cost of not having high CRI.

Or if you really want more light and throw there is always stuff like L7 SBT90.2, it should be neutral white, not cold, but it definitely is not compact…

thanks, i think m21b is fine. does not share threads with s21d but that is okay.

maybe m21b + GT FC40 1800k? i see that m21a is larger and does not have gt fc40 option at’all.

but how would you know that xhp70.3 hi 3000k would be 70cri variant and not 90cri? convoy does not list it anywhere. there is m21b with xhp70.3 hi 3000k but there is no info beside CCT

Ok, another option could be the Zebralight SC700D, modded with a dedommed high intensity warm emitter. Contact Bob_McBob and see with him. Two things thought, it’s going to be expensive and nobody knows what the actual throw will be.

For a thrower I wouldn’t obsess over high CRI. You aren’t seeing pretty colors 200m away anyway. XHP70.3 HI is still my preferred option.

With all your constrains you won’t find a light that fits them all. Better getting the priorities sorted. M21B w/ 70.3 HI 3000K sounds like a good choice.

But be ware that if you are used to TIR spill the reflector spill could be a bit limiting since it has a hard cut off at the reflector boundary, unlike the TIR which fades to darkness smoothly.

That being said, there is a reason why most throwers are cool white. It does illuminate pretty well for their intended use. A very warm thrower is a niche.

No, but it does have a 519A option, which is available in a number of CCTs and is high CRI. It’s one of the few options if you like the idea of a warm, 90+ CRI thrower. Obviously, it’s not going to be a world beater in terms of output, but for short to medium distances it’s not bad.

On the subject of warm throwers, I was asking Simon the other month about the possibility of putting an FC40 into the L21B. He said that he wasn’t sure and needed to do some testing to see how it worked, but I haven’t seen anything about it, so it may have had a hole in the beam or some other disqualifier. I’m just keeping my eyes on the store and noting the new items in case something like that ever pops up.

Anything with 519A 4000K dedomed. You can also replace cslnm1/cslpm1/xp-l with 519A on a light of your preference. Warm XHP70.3/ GT-FC40 from Simon are above bbl, if you care. It’s better to go with 4000K.
