Comparing 20 LEDs (with and without high CRI) in 14 Convoy s2+: final personal observations

We'll see! :D

I mean.. I hope to see it.. they are not here yet

What are you going to do with them all after testing?

I’ve heard a rumor that very soon there will be a huge S2+ giveaway around here… :smiling_imp: :innocent:

Cool that you’re doing this ChibiM!

I wish you could also include a 4000K 219B, E17A/E21A, and Optisolis to your list. The 4500K 219B that you’re getting from KD is the non-sw45k (i.e. non-rosy) version. It’s the sw45 which is brighter and still nice, but quite different than the sw45k. The 4000K 219Bs that I got from Ilumn are one of my favorite LEDs.

Too bad we’re not in the same neighborhood so I could contribute to your list of 4000K LEDs.

Gt-fc40 4000k can be had in m21c for 35 usd.

B35am 4500k in s21a for less than that.

I’ve done similar tests to what it looks like you are planning. I used Solar Force P60 hosts. This makes it easy to swap pills for comparisons.

That Cree XP-L HI U6 5A3 LED is one of my favorites in lights I can live w/o high CRI.

I’ve sampled the LH351D LEDs from several on line sources. It is my favorite LED for good compromise of CRI, tint, and lumens.
But they are not all equal. The duv difference is significant from source to source.
Every 351 I’ve tested look better to me shaved to ~1mm. It drops the CCT, and more importantly, duv.

Of the different CCTs, the lowest duv samples I’ve found are:
5700k: Version from KaiDomain is OK. I’ve tested samples from KD and Convoy. Not many places to get a 5700k, 90 CRI LED.
5000k: I’ve tested versions from DigiKey, KD, Convoy, and Sofirn. The best version is R6 flux bin from DK. It is close to the first samples I bought in a group buy from AEDe.
4000k: I’ve tested versions from DigiKey, KD, and Mtn Electronics. None quite match the early group buy from AEDe, but the Q6 flux bin from DK is close.

I also like the 3500k Q2 flux bin from DigiKey.

I know shipping from DK can be high but there can be a big variation in Duv.

Happy Testing!

Hi Chibi, I will get you 3 leds that you are not allowed to miss in your comparison: 219B V1, in R9080 4500K and in R9080 4000K. And a SST20 in 4000K. I assume on 16mm DTP boards?

Hey Djozz, that would be really cool.

I'm also talking to Hank about the 219b, on a board. I'll probably have to order the DM11 to get free shipping on the LED ;)

((And review the DM11 that is)

Simon now has 4500K Nichia 519A R9080 for sale. But you already made your order.

In Nichia’s nomenclature, R9080 means that the expected CRI is between 90~80?

It means it’s 90cri and R9 is 80 (how well it shows reds)

Oh, got it. Ty for the answer!

It means the CRI Ra will be 90 minimum, and the CRI R9 will be 80 minimum

Here is a chart showing that Low CRI LEDs have a Negative R9… iow, they are incapable of producing Red

look at the Red bars in the following pics:

and here is a 9050 High CRI LED:

the white bar on the right is CRI Ra (average of bars 1-8)

Wow, how does that work? I can understand a 0 value indicating no R9 is being emitted but a negative value would mean it’s sucking R9 out of the atmosphere?

ChibiM, impressive commitment to your quest for knowledge

Don't know yet. May replace the LEDs again with the original SST20 they were shipped with, and sell them. I don't need so many S2+ :)

Only if diffused rather heavily.

The eeeevil G3 even used as a mule will spit out a bluish center and hideous yellow periphery when aimed at an oft-hunted White Wall.

Here's a quick update.

  1. received 3* LEDs from Djozz
  2. received 1* 219B from Hank
  3. received all emitters from Kaidomain
  4. Convoy S2+ ... no tracking updates since Jan 17

I quickly skimmed this thread and didn’t see any Luxeon emitters. The V, V2, and HL2X are often loved by some here. (The hl2x is new and actually hasn’t gotten much love due to green tint and relatively low overdriving headroom).

Anybody that could supply these to Chibi?

Thanks JaredM, but I think I'm good :D

I'm busy enough, lol :D

It's just a comparison between different branded LEDs to see how much of a difference there is between all the offerings, especially taking into account the difference between tints and CRI

Ah, the V2… not one I think about often. I got a guy at work started down the rabbit hole. One of the dozens of lights that I have loaned him for testing had a V2 in it, a VG10 (one of my favorite pocket throw hosts). It was one of his personal favorites, I do like it as well. That was the only V2 I every captured in the will and reflowed.
