Comparing Opple 3 to Opple 4 w sw45k

yes

and there is no way to automatically calculate dUV or get a semblance of an accurate R rating correct?

correct, no matter what app we use, the Opple 3 will not calculate DUV and will not report R9

like you, I have an Opple 4 but I never use it

recently I spent a bunch of quality time retesting the Opple 4 with both the Smart and Home app. I did this to help a friend decide whether to buy an Opple 4, or have no Opple at all. I vote Yes Opple over No Opple, but there are a number of disclaimers and limitations to owning an Opple 4.

My conclusion is that the Opple 4 works best w the Smart app (not the Home app and not with the Lightmaster app). The Opple 4 is better than nothing if someone wants to have the ability to check CRI Ra and R9, plus have automatic DUV displayed. But I only recommend using it with High CRI LEDs

And, Opple 4 DUV is not the same as Opple 3 and Opple 4 has a very large range of error in how it reports R9 or Low CRI LEDs (and daylight).

With High CRI the Opple 4 does give somewhat useful DUV, even though as shown in the first post photos, it is about 30 points more negative than Opple 3. And Opple 4 R9 is also somewhat useful, but only for High CRI LEDs.

Opple 4 gives very high R9 values for Low CRI LEDs… which should actually have negative R9… otoh, the Ra values are slightly informative, although again they are not identical to Opple 3 Ra, for Low CRI.

Overall I only recommend the Opple 4 for reading R9 of High CRI LEDs. And I only recommend the Opple 4 to someone that missed the chance to buy an Opple 3.

It is convenient to have the Opple 4 automatically calculate DUV, but the results dont match Opple 3.

In fact, no matter if we have a Sekonic, Colormunki, Opple 3, Opple 4, none of the data from someones LED test will be identical to the data from a different person’s LED.

My sw45k is not the same as your sw45k, no matter what tools we use to measure them.

an Opple is only useful for comparing our own LEDs to each other, and to give us a numeric reference value to quantify DUV differences that we see with our eyes.

The Opple 3 OR Opple 4 can be Very useful for comparing Tint numerically. I can show you a photo of two lights side by side, and then add Opple DUV numbers to the image to let you see the RELATIVE difference visually and numerically.

Even though the numbers would be different on a Sekonic, they show a Relative difference in Tint, numerically.

to me, pictures and numbers are much easier to share and communicate than words like,
creamy white
pure white
slight green tint
neutral tint
very pink tint
etc

So to me, any Opple makes it much easier to be a Tint Snob… LOL

Even though the tint number is not universally accurate it gives Relative differences that I find much easier to communicate.

btw, thanks to this thread by No-Acadia-1512 on reddit

he shared a link to buy Opple 3, that are still in stock… here (warning, site is in German Dutch, with a ton of popup windows that I find impossible to navigate… good luck)

It’s actually dutch, but that’s not too different from my native language, low german .

I wouldn’t buy the LM3 now. Support of the app ended some time ago, so any Android update might break it.

I hope this comes into fruitation one day:

Thank You!
