I actually prefer the '502 and that was my first real EDC for ages. 1-mode, XP-L 5000K or so.

Prefer lower K, like 4000K or so, so if I had to redo it, that’s what I’d stick in there, maybe a ~4000K 519A for nice CRI and tint.

My '501s are mainly hosts, but I have a purple '501 host with 365nm UV drop-in and ZWB2 filter.

No pix of any of them, as I just, well, use them…

I really despise those retarded thumb-cutouts on tailswitches, which is why I always liked the '501 and '502. Especially the '502 with the smooth rounded tailcap. Just a nice feel.

Whether the button’s flush, proud, or recessed, NO cutouts. That would be a dealbreaker, especially if I can just go back to any of my existing hosts or complete lights.

I’m also not a fan of clips, and almost immediately rip them off of any new lights I get. And again the '502 is an exception, with the screwed-in clip that actually has a nice contour, and instead of just digging into my hand like most other clips, actually lets me get a decent grip on it, so I don’t mind it (even though I never use it).

If I were to use either as a “tactical light”, I’d have a forward-clicky switch (ie, momentary-on) to be able to flash’n’dash. Also, 1-mode only, as to not start switching modes, brightnesses, etc., by just flicking the switch too quickly or accidentally touching it in a backpack, bag, pocket, etc.

For a multi-mode EDC, reverse-clicky is probably better, but low-to-high and NOT high-to-low. Also, no blinkies in the main cycle, better to just hide them well out of the way, like triple-click, and double-click for “turbo”.

A sucky UI, and I just won’t use the light, as there are plenty of lights with UIs that don’t suck. Too many great lights in hardware are completely ruined with a retarded UI in software. (Looking at you, Wuben…)

So… the '501 and '502 are already pretty damned good as hosts, and the problem is the drop-ins they often come with. I wouldn’t change the hosts at all.

You can change the beams/uses by, say, a large-chip emitter with orange-peel reflector for a “floody” beam, small chip emitter with smooth reflector for a tighter throwier beam, etc. Take care of any artifacts like rings, corona, etc.

Maybe offer inserts of diffusion film to fit between reflector and front glass. Lightly-frosted film can diffuse the beam slightly to simply eliminate some artifacts, or heavily-frosted film can cure a multitude of sins.

Just some ideas. Go crazy…

Hey, thanks for the detailed breakdown! No photo requirements now :flashlight::facepunch:

For my ~2010 model WF501B:

  • The anodising could be better, it’s easily damaged
  • The tail cap/ switch assembly could be improved. The internal round nut (that secures the switch assembly in the tail cap) often will work it’s way loose. It happens when the tail cap is unscrewed to remove the battery. I think it’s due to the nut being the mating surface with the body. Some other flashlight tail caps have a ledge in the tail cap that the body screws onto. The nut is smaller in diameter and doesn’t touch the body when the tailcap is screwed on.

As far as P60 drop ins, my two favourites (for light output) are:

  • A 3V Cree XHP50 HD, the light output (spread and throw) are impressive.
  • A triple XPL-HI .

Kaidomain make single, triple and quad Nichia high CRI drop ins too. Something like that would be popular with people after better light quality over quantity.

For the drivers- no strobe/ SOS. Kaidomain have managed to implement double press for turbo, that would be good.

And, a pic my WF501B,

I still have a 501b… well kinda. I use the head on a different body.

I had numbers of 501b clones and was shocked when I got a real one years later . Bought it on the failed Dino Direct thanksgiving sale . The one where they changed prices on stuff you had in your cart . So when you checked out all the prices changed .
Oh the happy memories!!!
The light wasn’t the usual cheap paint , but had a nice matte finish to it .

Keep the innovation coming, mod master! :wrench::bulb: :+1:

Appreciate the feedback! We’ve made some tweaks to the tailcap/switch assembly in current production, but real-world testing will tell if they meet your standards. Noted on the anodizing issue – thanks for keeping it real!

Thanks so much for choosing the real UltraFire 501b, supporting us, and sharing your story! I’m really glad you got the genuine one — our matte finish is definitely nicer than those clones😄

 Alright, since participation numbers are lower than expected, I’m opening up the competition to all UltraFire flashlight owners – let’s get more folks in on the action! :flashlight::boom:

Thanks for the GAW
Looks like i’ll be spending and getting another one or two :flashlight:

LOL, just a heads-up – you might wanna grab stuff that’s not hit with tax hikes first! If you’ve got your eye on taxed items, maybe hold off until the policy rolls back. We’ll drop the prices back to normal once that happens!

DV-S9. Love the light, but a quiescent drain of 10mA (probably for the Hall-effect chip) kills a fully-charged 26650 in about 3wks or so.

So it’s great as an actual diving light (but I don’t dive) when you charge the cell just before using it, but isn’t a great standby light if you have storms, pouring rain, etc., and just want to keep it around for outdoor use in that weather.

With triple O-rings to seal it, you know it’s going to be waterproof. :joy:

I’ve owned these 3 for many years:

Just between us – we’re engineering a high-performance dive light with 21700 battery tech.

Thanks INeedMoreLumens – those lights couldn’t be in better hands!

I’ve got 2 of them, a 5 mode and a single mode. When I started bike commuting around 2007 I started using AA powered lights. I wasn’t sure about switching to Li-ion powered lights and got a 501 and some not so great 18650s to power it. It was definitely better than the lights I’d been using, but not as good as it was when I upgraded to Panasonic batteries. The second 501 shortly followed the first and they both have worked great.

They definitely look well used now. After the single mode got replaced by a C8 I carried it around in a tool bag for a while. It’s not as nice looking as when I got it but it still works great.

1 Thank

We’re truly honored our flashlights have improved your life. We’ve been continuously enhancing battery technology - with technological advancements, battery quality has significantly upgraded. The C8 remains a classic and solid product. Thank you for sharing your experience.

No idea how to use this site or attach a photo so fingers crossed. This site is a nightmare to use. Would love to win something though. This is my well used ultra fire torch. Served me well for many years as a diesel mechanic for Kubota. Cant upload a photo??? The camera section don’t work. Apparently new users can’t upload pictures. Seriously???
