damn, sounds like i need to buy a 4x18a sbt90.2 before the driver gets a thermal stepdown LOL, i for one am glad it doesn't have it. Then again, from the perspective of a reseller (and liabilities concerned) i get it.. then again, just sell the light with a Warning. NOT for the Casual User!

Well, I disagree. This may be the cheapest SBT90 light (or, at lest, the cheapest multi-cell one), but it is the most expensive Convoy light. I can forgive somewhat wonky ramping speed and long pause between changing regimes in stepped mode, but temperature regulation is stated in specifications and it is important for such high-powered led. I am also extremely disappointed because I have ordered this light 2 weeks ago and it will arrive soon. I will consider opening a dispute on Aliexpress if this will be confirmed.

I disagree as well. Convoy is the Chevrolet of flashlights. Inexpensive, no frills, and super reliable. If I had to pick one light for reliability, it would be Convoy. I like electronic switches, but I would not trust one with my life.

Opening a dispute for a perfectly working flashlight? That sounds a bit extreme.

Lets have a little look at what the store page says shall we before you think you’re entitled to opening one.

“The flashlight has low voltage protection and temperature control protection.”

Nowhere does it say that it has thermal protection based on a thermal sensor limit. The timed step down is still considered “thermal protection”

Therefore you have no ground to stand on for a dispute.

I’m a little disappointed, but it’s an incredible light for the money and opening a dispute for the above reason is ridiculous

I’ll still be purchasing more of these, I’ll just advertise them with a little caution.

It actually works fine and handles the temperature well. If you use it as a flashlight outdoors, as it is intended, it will not get hot. Even in 30 degrees with no moving air it gets uncomfortable to hold, yet not dangerous to burn. At the same time it is not stepping down agressively and gives you quite a lot of light, which is the main pupose. And finally - you always have the option of manually decreasing the level if it is uncomfortable hot for your hands. If I have to compare, I had Thrunite Catapult V6, which was reaching this temperature in test for the first 15 minutes (its rubber cap of charging port also opening), and if you test Convoy L6 under these conditions - it will get much hotter.

Button LED is the switch LED. 7 clicks will re-configure the switch LED control. On the AVR MCU’s, we can control a low and high level output for the switch LED on just using an I/O pin. Beacon is a periodic blink of the switch LED. So if the switch LED is OFF, 7 clicks will change it to LOW, another 7 clicks will change it to HIGH, etc. That setting will be saved off in flash memory, so it will be set that way until you change it.

Simon would you consider building a semi-practical hot rod light? M3C host, SBT90.2 LED, 20 amp driver, 26800 tube or 26650 with 26800 extension, 21700 plastic insert. Host has enough mass to be almost practical, thermal sensor set a little generously high.

With your modes set as Modes: 1–10–35–100, double click strobe. It could almost be practical, the host is more than half the weight of the L7. 290g vs 537g. Or 333% the current of your S21A at 333% the weight.

TURBO does not need to work for a long time. Its main function is to make people around you exclaim “WOW”. Is my understanding correct?

3*XHP70.2 is in design now

This would be a great light! I can imagine it being over 12,000 lumens and being very efficient at low modes. Is this with the same 3X21A host as the single emitter one or does it have a bigger head for more throw?

3 * XHP70.2 would probably be very floody. Have you considered 3 SST-70* version? The Imalent R30C has this in a small host and throws a long way.

Another option would be 3 SBT90.2*! This would be very expensive and even with 3*21700 it would would step down from turbo quickly. The Haikelite HK90 is like this and has impressive specs.

The brightness of SST70 is low, but its advantage is that it has better light-gathering performance.
It is difficult to design an excellent 3*SBT90. 2 driver.

There’s a youtube video showing this, using Anduril. Anduril works the same.

In this case they are using the Sofirn IF25A but there are many other Anduril lights using a switch LED.

This is well in the realm of an enthusiast’s light rather than one for the general masses, so high temp is…good?…and expected if we want the numbers/performance. That said, 72°C…wow. Tooo hot. Temp regulation rather than timer is the best approach, imo, and 60°C is the norm but still a bit high for the safety of users. Your hand isn’t going to dissipate fifteen degrees although you’ll want to change settings, turn it off, or drop it well before that point. I’d have to go look up numbers again but iirc we’re around 50°C for first degree burns and 55°C for second degree/blisters. Anyone buying this light needs to be made aware that it is not a typical light and to learn about its safe use, same as multiple cells in series.

I plan to print an anti-scalding logo and precautions on the head of the flashlight in the next batch.

I think it’s not burned, seems like the ‘die’ is died. My phone camera can’t take clear photo when the emitter lights up. The arrow shows the died ‘die’ position.
