Hello I have the L21 with SBT90.2 and have screwed it up by installing the battery backwards. It actually does still work but stuck on 100 or 50 percent power only and I’m not sure which.
I would have never tried installing a new cell in the dark had I knew there was no protection.
Anyway Simon sent me links for 2 things,
- New driver that is now protected
- New tail switch
My question is how difficult will it be to install this new driver? Does this mean I will have to remove my SBT90.2 and install it on the new driver?? As in like de solder it?? If so I have no equipment to even do this.
Or is it just 2 wires that will need soldering?? Even that is going to suck because I want it to be nice and professional. I asked Simon if there was a way to order the parts I need already all put together where I can just screw it in and I’m not even sure he understood this being his reply didn’t seem like he did. Anyway I’m just wanting to figure out if I’m going to be able to do this. If not I guess I’d try and find someone who could.
Also can anyone tell me if the new driver is better than the old one?? Mainly which one puts out more juice?? This is just my fun light so I want it super awesome!!!
I’ve already replied to this person on reddit, gave him a step by step on how to install the driver a few days ago, a bit confused why he’s posting here about it.
The driver outputs much the same lumens at 100%, however, it sustains way more than the fet driver.
I am terrible with computers and haven’t found the Reddit thread again. I’ll go look for that now.
I’ve still not been able to find that thread I asked you about this on Reddit so I’ll just figure this all out when I get the parts. I am not even sure how Reddit works being I’m hardly ever on there.
- Unscrew the bezel and remove the reflector, and gasket which sits around the LED.
- Desolder the two wires on the LED board
- Unscrew the retaining ring holding in the driver, remove the driver
- Install new driver and solder the two wires
- Use a qtip to clean the LED surface of any flux residue. The SBT90 has a glass lens so no need to use Isopropyl Alcohol for cleaning.
- Place gasket around the LED. Very important otherwise the reflector will short the driver.
- Reassemble
If the flashlight was less than a year old, you should have requested Simon to send you a new flashlight. The description of the L21A SBT90.2 states that the driver has reverse polarity protection. You should not be required to install parts when you lack the skill to repair it.
