Hi people, I’m new to flashlights and looking for a flood and throw light to illuminate close and mid range distance like maximum 250m.
I want a compact single cell light that can run on high mode for awhile and deals with heat well and affordable.
So I’m thinking of this Convoy XHP50.2, but is it a good flood and throw?
I’d be very interested to hear your opinion and thank you for any input you may have.
I do have a few L21A lights, but I don’t own the XHP50.
Any decent 21700 will work, typically Samsung 40T seems to perform good.
The SST40 is a 3V driver as is the XHP50, so you can swap the LED.
Every flashlight’s output will decrease as the battery weakens. Some do it quicker than others. Many flashlights have a thermal system that will reduce power as the light heats up.
You owe it to yourself to spend some time reading through the forum pages.
There are thousands of different lights out there. They are all a bit different and are for different purposes.
My reasons for looking at this light because of its large reflector to throw light coupled with a floody LED which I’m hoping will output a wide beam that reaches far. From what I’ve read on this forum and seen on youtube Astrolux FT03 XHP50.2 puts out a wider beam than SST40, it’s brighter so better for closer ranges. I gathered that L21A is quite similar to the FT03 but made with more mass, this should help dissipate heat well, it uses a constant current driver which I prefer over a FET driver. L21A is single cell so it is not as long as an L2 for example, it’s body size is acceptable to me as its much smaller than monster lights like BLF GT.
What is a good flood and throw light?
I would say your reasoning about the 50.2 is sound. It will put out many lumens for a fair distance. Some will tell you that it will do neither well but unless you are doing something like long range hunting at night, I think it will be a fine compromise. Another one to look at is the Astrolux EA01. Flashoholic’s videos have some great beam shots. This is a smaller light though with less mass.
Pennzy, Thanks for your info, appreciate it. Great recommendation. I like how versatile it is and it uses 26650 which I wanted in the first place so that it can run longer on a single charge. The TIR looks interesting. I thought C8 was compact, EA01 can be even more so. Awesome. On the other hand its small size does make me wonder how well it can dissipate heat. I do like the Anduril UI for its ramping ability. Great recommendation and now I want the EA01 instead…
The L2 can run in single cell and would be basically the same length as the L21a. I’m sure you could ask Simon to do an L2 single cell and XHP50.2 in it. That would give you the longer run time.
I think either the L2 or the L21a would be good choices for what you want. See this review here of the L21a with an SST40. I would imagine the XHP50.2 would be very close in performance with a little more output and less heat. It should give you an idea of flood, throw and overall performance. Hope it helps.
I just got my newest Convoy S21A the other day. The older one with an SST40 and DC-Fix is a very bright, floody light. The newest one with the Osram KW CSLPM1.TG, is shockingly throwy for the size. I dunno if it’ll reach out to 250m, but with a 5000 mah battery, I think the runtime on both is pretty amazing.
You didn’t ask for 2 lights, but I use my S21As frequently. The L2 I have sits unused a lot because it’s so big. It’s only slightly larger than an L21A. Without batteries, 2x S21A is about the same or less cost than an L21A. FWIW.
To your original question on the XHP 50.2, my Astrolux EC01 with that emitter is a decent mix of throw and flood. Since Astrolux claims 298m throw with a much smaller reflector, you should be able to get at least that on an L21A, even accounting for Astrolux’s Chinese candela. I do like my EC01s, but my son has had problems with his.
L21A with SST40 is your best bet. It throw super-mean, but also can handle heat. You pay a penalty for 50.2s because over 1,600 lumens in a light will not be sustainable.
