I have 3 projects i want to do. Im not a very experienced modder. Though i can change lenses and switches no worries. Im an rc car guy and can build pc’s, my soldering is passable.
I want to convert an old s21a with xhp50.2 into a sft70 3000k. I have the 20mm mounted mcpcb and the 17mm 5amp boost driver, the brass adapter and some tir lenses. But i forgot the gasket. Have nfi what to get. There are several listing suitable for sft70.
Second job is to change a m21b sft70 3000k from stock 5amp boost to 8 amp boost driver. And do a bit of thermal paste on the pill. I ordered the 22mm 6v 8amp boost driver. I assume i dknt need a different thickness gasket? The one that came with will be fine?
Once i manage these without error. I want to convert an old m21a i have to take the sft42r and the 20amp 22mm 3v boost driver. Just some fun. The parts will be 20mm mcpcb sft42r, 22mm 3v 20amp buck driver and a gasket. Is this correct? If so, which gasket?
Yes! The 5050 TIRs sold by Convoy all come with centering devices: either a white plastic holder with a square hole at the bottom, or 4 mounting posts that go around the LED. No other gasket is needed.
I would advise against this. From koef3’s test of the emitter, you can calculate that:
At 5A, the SFT70 3000K puts out 1826lm at 33W;
At 8A, 2301lm at 57W.
So you get +73% more power consumption for a barely noticeable +26% output. Plus, high CRI emitters lose some CRI at high drive currents. Convoy’s high-current drivers also tend to have extremely bright and closely-spaced lower modes, which IMO makes the UI much less usable.
Ok thanks. I will heed your advice. Im just trying to find something to play with while im laid up with a broken great toe. I figure a bit of hot rodding might be fun.
I did order an op reflector for the s21a, as well as the tir’s. What if any gasket would that require?
I will check the reflector opening on the old m21a and order accordingly. But stick with the 10amp driver for the sft42r
I’ve heard anecdotal reports that the 20A driver is ok due to the battery being unable to deliver 20A to the SFT42R, due to voltage sag. But I do think the 10A driver is more sensible!
Seeing as i cant hot rod the old m21a to sft42r. As there is no 20mm or 17mm, 10amp driver. I have a new idea. Ive and old L6 with xhp70.2. Its fine… but it told me it might be able to hang out with the cool L7 kids if it can have a sbt90.2 transplant.
Ive done some searching. Its been mentioned. But being pretty noob, i want to check the details from what i can work out.
Afact internally the L6 and L7 are identical. Is this correct?
What i cant tell is if the reflectors are identical? The L7 smooth reflector with 13mm opening and 9090 gasket should fit? reflector for L6 L7 - Convoy flashlight
Obviously it wont have the slightly better heatsinking on the head. But it will be silver
The LiitoKala 5000mah cells i already have are in decent condition and should be up to the task.
they’re essentially the same, but their mcpcb sizes differ: the L7 takes 25mm, the L6 takes 20mm. they use the same reflectors.
consider the SFT90, also. Simon has a great bin – it’s potentially brighter than the SBT90.2, and it has a nicer tint. it’s also cheaper. i put one in an L7 host recently with that 20.5a driver, and it’s awesome.
Oh i didn’t think of that. Im becoming much more of a tint snob as time passes. Big fan of the sft 70 3000k. It’s waaaaayy cheaper. I much happeir with that. Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I will do it. What gasket and reflector opening did you use?
That is a 7070 isnt it? I would theoretically use the exact same gasket as the xhp70 currently in there?
Probs best to just a new reflector. I assume the 11mm opening with 7070 gasket.
Orange peel or smooth? Koef test says either, but if you’re happy with yours…
it’s a 7070 footprint, yep. smooth reflector, 11mm opening. the sbt90.2 is great, but it can be quite green. the sft90 is clean white. i like it a lot.
i found it handy to buy a whole bunch of gaskets of all different sizes when i started DIYing - some lights have had me gluing gaskets together and/or sanding them down to get an LED focused just right, so i was glad to have a bunch of extras.
what colour antireflective coating does your L6 lens have? i know the original lens on my silver/clear L6 had a magenta coating.
Its a magenta lens with an op reflector. I will get the smooth reflector as well. Do i need the green ar lens?
The gaskets are a few cents each. I will take your advice and just get a collection now. Makes sense. Stuff can take an eternity to get to Australia. Ive got my tackle box with all my parts, orings, switches and crap organised.
you don’t necessarily need it, but a magenta lens coating will raise the DUV of the emitter behind it. i don’t know if all of Simon’s lenses are green-coated now, but the replacement L6 lens i ordered earlier this year was. you should be able to leave him a note with you order, just to be sure (if you decide to get one).
i’m actually just across the ditch. shipping’s usually not too bad from convoy – i would say most stuff arrives in about 10 days. funnily enough, getting stuff to NZ from Australia takes about a month.

Simons shipping end is fine. Its when it gets to Australia thats the problem. I live in the bush… hrs from a major centre. Aus post is the problem. Imagine nz post… but staffed by… Australians
