Convoy S2+ UV 365nm flashlight, Nichia led inside

Check out this topics on the Nichia leds

Especially this with only 60 degree angle of radiation might be very interesting to you

Djozz and Lexel - very observant. You are of course 200% correct. The little Convoy beats the heck out of my big 4LED deathray when it comes to spot and throw. But we mineral collectors are an odd bunch. We don’t care much about throw (at best from hip-level to the ground) and care even less about spot (usually). More important to us is flood and closeup work. When searching for minerals we are looking at the ground beneath out feet. When lighting a mineral the small spot provides uneven lighting (unless it’s a very small rock). Flood works much better. The exception to this is at mineral shows - the bright lights overwhelm most LEDs and an intense spot can overcome. (make sense?)

(Ignorance showing - what’s DTP?)

Direct thermal path

If you dont care about throw get a spacer for the LED and drive it as a mule

Wow! You guys got a great thing going here - why did I not join this board before?
Thx!

Mule? More ignorance…. You mean position it closer to the lens?

This is a mule,
No reflector just a spacer, and the LED gets closer to the glass

Pretty much you get the beam angle the LED produces
NVSU233A has a lens for 60degree

Yeah, have done that but without the spot the Convoy light is pretty dim. I also tried a wider angle reflector - better, but the spot really matters. That’s why I’m toying with the LZ1 idea to get more radiant power
Edit - FWIW that’s what I do with my 4 LED light - no reflectors at all.
Edit edit: Just a side not in case y’all are not aware of it. I use Hoya U325c filter glass in my big light. Very expensive glass but great xmission @365nm (and 254nm)

After getting my UV light there were many times I wish I could have turned back the clock to my minerology days decades ago. Yeah, it’s an ideal light for that.

 Today I use it in my driveway (among other places) just to see what I can see in the bank run gravel.

You can also use a smaller reflector in the S2+
More flood but also bigger hotspot

Like this 10.6x7mm

It may look odd but works

Thx! Ordered… (wish there was a “like” button here)

pretty sure my UV S2+ came with the smaller reflector already.

It’s not needed. Just say thanx or post that you like the info. People will figure it out without using a decoder ring.

Which UV pass filter works best with S2+ ?

ZWB2 for 365nm

Why Convoy electronics do not sell S2+ UV more? Maybe new version in production?

Tried a new wider angle reflector in my Convoy S2 (as discussed in a previous post we mineral nuts prefer a wide beam for closer work). Thought y’all might be interested in the results. I have a third reflector on order that was suggested by Lexel, yet to be tested. Forgive the “beam shots” as I’m not a pro at this stuff like you all are…

The flashlight on the right has the wider angle reflector - from Digikey LEDiL 711-1321-ND. The light on the left has the original reflector. FOV is appx. 8” wide.

A waring to all those who use the S2+
the emitter is overdriven 200mA and the original aluminum star has bad thermal performance

there are reports of damaged LEDs on german forum

with the stock aluminum board the emitter can get damaged by overheating
the Emiter has Tj of only 90°C
the emitter has 11°C per W thermal resistance
so at 700mA that is 30°C
with ambient temperature the light gets up to 45°C
That leaves only 15°C between the LED and the body

So if you frequently use it also when its hot better get djozz custom board

So you´re basically saying this light has an insufficient heat transfer “out of factory” and will destroy itself just by normal usage? Is Convoy/Simon aware of this production flaw ?!?

K.

The diode is very temperature sensitive
And factory overdriven by 40%
Maybe he get a better MCPCB or reduce current a little bit

When the light gets hot the Diode can get damaged

Its not on many lights but the lights design is not good enough to ensure a safe operation
