Convoy S21D w/ legendary Nichia 219b :) - Review & comparison w/ Nichia 519a, E21a & other lights with Nichia LEDs incl. Emisar D4V2, Convoy S21F. (Summary & measurements on P. 1)

Angular tint shift refers to variations in tint as a function of angle, within the same emitter. It does NOT refer to the CCT change going from domed to dedomed.

Domed LEDs tend to send bluish light forward and yellow-green light to the side. The emission collected by a reflector/TIR into the hotspot is mostly the sideways emission, which is warmer than the average/integrated CCT of the emitter, hence a warmer (and greener) hotspot.

If you are ok with angular tint shift, this is a completely fine configuration. If you care about beam consistency like me, this is not the way to go. It's all up to personal preference.

Thanks very interesting; I think I got it now. Central is warmer but the integrated CCT is higher.
BTW your description fits exactly behavior of SBT90.2. I’ve always wondered why there is a slightly green-yellow central spot.

One more question pls - if I understand correctly: The dome causes a tint shift and that’s why in the 519a LED, de-doming lessens/eliminates (?) the tint shift? If so… why does my dome-less E21a has a “worse” tint shift than the domed 219b? Or why does it have a tint shift at all? TIA

That's an excellent question! Most LEDs, including the 519A, have a very uniform light-emitting surface: the intensity, CCT, and tint is consistent across the whole die. With these LEDs, dedoming reduces angular tint shift considerably, virtually eliminating it when paired with a good TIR optic.

The problem with E21A is that the light-emitting surface is not uniform. The intensity, CCT, and tint varies across different parts of the emitter, so the tint shift is going to be bad whether the emitter is domed or not. The only way to eliminate tint shift in this case is to run it as a mule, or to use heavily frosted optics to blend the beam as much as possible.

Y’all prefer boost driver or dual-channel

So this beast is here. It is unfortunately out of stock on Wurkkos web site now but apparently should be back later this month.

Although it is a Nichia I think I will post my impression on it on a separate thread as it is a completely different form and style of light. I have some lumen monsters/super throwers with new Chinese LED on order (Haikelite HK05, JKK76), maybe I will compare them together, not just output but the crucial beam color and tint.

What’s special about the light is it’s a result of Terry @ Wurkkos working with Budgetlightforum HERE, so yes this is a “local” product. There is a TRULY fantastic review of it on 1lumen if you want to read about it HERE .

It’s only 5000K 519 tho :confounded:

You’re very sharp :+1:  . But first the pug: a co-worker has one so I see pics and videos all the time. Extremely cute dog; I would love to have one but not the time yet.

I have 2 Nichia 519a 4500k lights that both measure under specs wrt CCT: Convoy S21D (TIR) that measures ~3900-4100k and a Skilhunt H04R RC (reflector) that measures ~4200k (using two Opple’s that measure nearly all other LED’s close to specs). The beam color is on the warm side so I’ve been meaning to try the next step up such as 519a 5000k, so this Wurkkos is actually absolutely perfect for me.

Partial crop from the excellent 1lumen review below. The road is over-exposed but color rendering of bark and leaves of pine tree is excellent, so fingers crossed until I get to play with it.

OT - sorry: Excellent sale on TS32 with 519a on Amazon - bringing the cost down to $99.99, about Wurkkos’s regular price level, which is currently out of stock. And of course if you want a Christmas self gift this will make it in time.

I haven’t tested the light yet (it really is a xmas gift and I took it out for picture only) but I didn’t buy it without reading every word of a trusted review. This is the only super light (10,000 plus lumen) with Nichia LED on the market that I know off. CCT 5217

12,000 plus “Nichia” lumens :innocent:

I hope to start a thread about this light versus some Chines LED super-lights (Haikelite HK05 and JKK76) but I think I already know no one is going to beat it on beam tint and color rendering.

To best of my knowledge, you have to use two codes: first click on the 20% sale button, then on check out add the code T7NAHM8M. The details are here if you have question: 40% OFF Wurkkos Powerful TS32 Flashlight(LH351D+519A LED) on Amazon US

cool light! thx for the link and coupon

THX, I Ordered one. I was curious about whether it came with the handle. It seems to be optional on the Wurkkos site. It looks like the Amazon one does come with it. Correct?

BTW, you must have gotten your really fast. With “Prime” shipping mine show next Thursday for delivery.

Yes mine comes with handle and I think this is true for TS32 on Amazon.

It seems like with the double discount, the price even matches the 25% sale price of the light on Wurkkos China site (which is not in stock)! Once you add the handle and the battery. Such a sweet deal for a light you could get from Amazon, the only place I see TS32 available now.

I got nervous recommending a light without using or testing, so I broke down and started some preliminary test on the light instead of waiting until Christmas day :innocent: . I absolutely love what I see so far - probably THE most fun light in my collection. Yes more than TS30S, even though TS30S still the throw king at ~1km throw. I hope to write some prelim report in case anyone wants to buy this light while it’s still on sale.

Glad you are liking it. All of the reviews I found were pretty positive. Now I just have to be patient until mine shows up. Too bad patience is not one of my virtues… :smiling_imp:

Fits with wurkkos short 20350 tube. Only one orientation and has to be quite a tight screw down.

Love it in shorty mode

Nice. And pretty “cute” :+1: .
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I pulled the trigger largely based on your thorough testing of the light. Loving it so far.

Also, if anyone’s interested, the sofirn SP35t tube and tailcap Lego with the s21d.

This allows you to have a nice dual-direction clip as well as a forward clicky switch if you wish.

It needs to be screwed tightly, but I can confirm it works.

Just wanted to share in case anyone was interested.

1 Thank

Thanks for sharing! I’m still waiting on the new S21D before pulling the trigger on a D4K……

What do you think Simon’s second best selling flashlight is?

Do you think the S2+ is a must own and would #2 also be a must-have IYO?

@snfx if that question is for me, sorry I have no idea.

S2+ likely no. 1 seller by far. It’s not a must own for me but that doesn’t mean anything - just personal preference.

hello! newbie looking for THE LIGHT. need an all rounder for walking in the nature mainly. budget is ~60$. i want flood mainly with some throw. somewhere around 5000k with no green or yellow tint. so far i thinking about a Wrukkos TS25 with nichia 519a 5000k and maybe dedoming 1-2 leds to get slightly warmer tint and throw. the best led for me i think the 519a 5700k dedomed would be but i dont know which lights would fit for my pocket with these leds and 1000+ lumens. also considering a Convoy S21D 519a 5700k dedomed maybe with 8A CC 10degree FLAT optics but thats not chargeable which a big minus for me also im not sure about which optic should i get. i really like the tint of the famous nichia 219b 4500k but i afraid it would be too hot and not enough lumen. ENLIGHT ME PLEASE
