Convoy S8 Cree XM-L2 U2-1A ? Review ? Anyone own one?

Anyone have one yet?

It’s pretty new and wondering how this thing performs!

Cheers everyone.

PS. It’s at : http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10002364/1457701-convoy-s8-cree-xm-l2-u2-1a-2-group-3-5-mode-500

I guess the $5.01 campaign didn't pay off that well. I would have expected at least one of the winners to write up a review here.

I have one… I have the warmest tint available though. It’s pretty much like all the other single 18650 Convoy tube style lights. Same driver. The thing I don’t like about it is the placement of the clip… it rides higher in the pocket than other lights in the Convoy S series. It’s also longer than the S5 and the S6…BUT… it takes protected and unprotected batteries, unlike several other of the Convoy lights. I was able to fit an Xtar 3100 mah in it (which is the same as a Panasonic 3100, I think).

As far as heatsinking goes, it ain’t a whole lot better than any of the convoy S-series. Those fins aren’t that big.

Oh and after having an Orange peel reflector in the S6 and S8, and a smooth in the S5… Orange peel reflectors seem to give a nicer beam pattern. The S5 has a smooth and the beam is a bit “ringy.” I really want to give a review of this, but these things take time. Maybe I’ll throw up a quick and dirty 3 light comparison review between the three lights. Owning 3 lights in the series… it really comes down to the size and clip style really, and if they take the unprotected batteries.

Oh and this looks like the 1a driver. I wouldn’t worry about heat management… the 1a is a great, modest driver. Plenty bright for what most people need. Unless you’re dead set on the cool white tint, maybe wait until they have a few more to purchase it.

I took some pictures of it while I taking pics of L4, but do not have time for a review nowadays…

If anyone wants to do a review I can provide many pictures and save them from taking pictures hassle

I finally got mine. Not Simon's fault. He was great. I just used mine for a longish hike lastnight. First impressions are really good, although I intend to reflash the driver and install a high CRI XM-L2. The quality is good, and it feels it. A softer hotspot, which I think is ideal for an EDC. The cutoff on the spill is slightly sharper than I'd like.

I think after I put in a new LED and reflash the driver with Dr Jones firmware, this will be my most used light, and I have plenty to choose from.

I second the statement that you wouldn't need to worry about heat with only 1A. This thing takes a while to heat up with 3A. 1A will be nothing.

Can someone confirm if the S8 legos with the other convoys? Specifically, will the tail cap from the S5 or S2 fit on the S8?

I have a S8 and a S2, I will check this evening (if no-one beats me to it). BTW, i like the S8 design better than any of the other Convoys, and the slight finning is not just show, it increases the surface area in the pill region by a factor between 1.5 and 2 (my estimation) it will really help with driving a led just a bit harder continuously.

The s8 and s2 are 100 percent lego-able (head, body, tailcap, pill and reflector). I don’t have an s5, so I can’t speak to that.
Djozz: I totally agree about the s8! It is my EDC right now with a triple XP-L and BLF17DD.

Thanks. I like the look of the S8 and S5 best, but the S8 appears to have more mass/surface area to deal with heat. My only complaint is the clip location on the S8, the tailcap from a different convoy would solve that.
