I’m considering getting a deep red light for no real reason and am stuck between the S2+ and T5. Which is these is likely to have the lowest low mode? Battery life is not a concern as I’m likely to just play with it around the house / use it on low for night-time bathroom excursions. I’m leaning towards the T5 for the TIR, but I could install one into an S2+ if that’s the better option.
I cant answer your question, but I thought id point out that - I think you mean the T5? Its the one with the TIR.

You’re absolutely right, good catch. I’ve amended my post. 
I have it in a red S2+ w/ Bistro UI and very happy with it. I much prefer the deep red versus the 620-630 nm emitters.
S2+ red low mode is very low. Too low for my taste.
I put a sst20-dr in a sofirn sp10 pro and it has an incredibly low moonlight (I use it with NiMH). I’d highly recommend it, very easy mod and the AA boost driver seems to work very well with the low voltage emitter.

Does it work well with 14500?
Ni-Mh should be fine but I wonder if the driver can handle the larger difference between battery voltage and LED Vf, since it’s not a buck driver.
It seems to work OK with a 14500 but I only gave it a quick test. I’ve used it extensively with NiMH and it works perfectly but I can’t really vouch for the 14500, as you say its not a buck driver (its linear if I remember correctly) so all that extra voltage is being dissipated by the driver. This could be a problem if used at high levels for a long time

Unfortunately swapping emitters involves buying tools, I may look into it at some point but for now I don’t have the equipment. 
I’m sure you could find someone near you willing to do it for you. I’d do it, but I’m in the UK though so that may not work
I am also in the UK. 
An SP10 Pro is a fair bit more expensive than a Convoy though, I’d probably get a T5 / T2 first and see how much use I got out of a red light.

Output between the s2+ and t3/t5 should be similar on moonlight (at least with lion in t series). Oddly I think the moonlight is brighter with nimh. I have seen current values for each, but I can’t remember where.
Moonlight with the deep red should be very low. I have a C8+ with the same driver as the S2+ and it is “is this thing on” kind of low…
I ended up with an amber osram and dc fix on an 18350 s2+ for a low level night light.

I’ve just realised that the T5 comes with a specific three-mode driver for the deep red emitter, three modes is fine but mode memory is not. That’s made the decision, S2+ it is with a TIR. I also added a Vapcell H16 and 18350 tube too because it was a bargain.
