After months of planning, I finally put a Kyocera SLD module on a Convoy Z1!
This is using my custom Polyboost driver, joining a collection of other 3 Convoy Z1 RGB multi-emitter laser builds.
Here it’s putting 1.6A at 9V.
Using this driver for consistency with the other builds, and because it have a nice “few ma” mode for allowing observation of the laser diodes and phosphorus layer through the front lens!

Budget host, totally out my budget LED module. cool build non the less. Last I’ve heard of Kyocera was when I had a flip phone way back day.

This is so pointless that I love it.

It’s part of a multi emitter laser collection, it’s for sure the least pointful one

I want this!
(Check pricetag on Mouser)
Oh I might rethink…
Very nice beam-sabre anyway!

Looking the last photo I just realized that this big ring is the gasket!
I need a black 7070 gasket now…
Looks good, do you have a CD number?
1 Thank
Try a sharpie to see if that actually solves the problem.

No need for it, planning a definitive solution directly.
I also regretted doing this on the yellow LEP as it was still had a bluish shinny finish and it sticks some dust.
But I can focus any part of the internals including the plane where this ring meets the square emitter, is it possible to see the gasket reflected on the mirrored part of the glass, neat!
Or even some wiring and the golden contacts they connect to if you pay attention:
The aspherical lens is projecting anything behind it, as it is supposed to do! And there is a “giant” bright ring around the emitter…
Not surprised that Z1’s comes with black gaskets and those black retainers

Also interested in an intensity measurement.
The website states that the module can achieve an intensity of 1300cd/m^2, which is somewhere around 4x that of best thrower LEDs available. Since the Z1 with SFT25R is said to reach 980m, one can estimate the intensity of the LEP Z1 by quadrupling the corresponding intensity, which comes out to just a hair under 10^6 candela (i.e., 1Mcd).

Cool build Pstool!
Does zooming the lens in and out make much of a difference?

Never did that measurement before, I’ll try to get into it on the next days

Totally! There are pics of both ends.
It goes to somewhat floody to full LEP (with too much spill for now)
One extra example of it completely unfocused, but aimed at the floor:

New gaskets arrived, decided on this one:
Inside the light:
Comparison with white and black gaskets:
Much better in my opinion!
I’ll take better beam shots later!

More photos of the black gasket:
Beamshots, it’s LEPier now!
And if someone wants to see the raw output of the LEP module, it’s very wide:

Got a new Z1 with W5050SQ3 3000k emitter:
Not on the same league as the LEP emitter:
The end.
(both with Z1 original lens and focused to this wall)
Just kidding, I need to wait to get dark to take beam shots.

This is my first LED Z1, out of 5
I’ll use this tube to try fitting an inner 22x19 copper tube for better thermal as all the laser Z1’s are powered by 2*18350 cells and get hot a little fast.
They are currently using the cheap plastic adapters.

Update on thermals
First I got the spare Z1, disassembled and stored the W5050sq3 3000k
Pre-squeezed the copper tube with a 2mm slot until it fitted on the flashlight:
Applied some AS MX6 thermal paste and spreaded a little
Started inserting the inner tube and moving the clamps little by little, at some point the mallet was needed
Some excess tube to cut and file down
And the tailcap fits!
Feeling nicely heavy now!
I still want to finish it better before transferring the LEP pill, need to remember to weight both tubes with and without the inner copper tube.

Sanded it until flush
With batteries
Weight compared to bare host and full assembly
I also added a new blue accent on the button to match the blue spills from the lasers
It’s performing much better, it takes a lot more time to heat up to concerning levels as the heat distributes pretty evenly over the tube.
Before this mod the front used to get very hot after not much usage.
Now the “head” stays just a little warmer than the rest of the flashlight.
Next upgrade is to apply Dow340 on the threads to see if some heat gets to the fins on the zooming part.
