Cree changed production process for XP-G2 emitters!

fasttech has xp-g2 s3 old vs new, i dont know.

another source to try …

That Ali link looks like the old production LEDs. Wondering which tint the photo is of? Mmm, maybe we should request photos of all different tints… if these are the real thing, this guy is in business.

Last night I used one of these ‘new’ type S4 3D emitters from intl-outdoor dedomed in a zoomie (a Supfire A2, nothing awesome) and because the mod is a replica of a mod with the old-type S3 3D dedomed, I was able to compare the performance. I did just compare it by eye thusfar, but the newcomer works very well, is even a tad brighter than the old type. But the current may be a bit different in this mod (although both are between 3.5 and 4A)
So to complicate things, the new production type XP-G2 is not in all cases a worse dedomer!

Djozz that are some good news…

De doming S4 2B brings us rough and unevenly lightened emitter surface which is clearly seen on any aspheric light.

Now about die projection of S4 3D emitter … Are those nasty, new production process phospor remains (like in new S4 2B) visible in beam projection?

It is not too bad, some reddish streaks appear, but nothing annoying. Here’s a projection made with a projector lens, to show the details better than with a flashlight aspheric lens (sorry about the rough dedome and the burnt bit on the phosfor  ) :

I was afraid of that… I mean what I see now…. But thank you very much for your effort…

I can’t lie… It looks really bad and dirty ): Remaining phosphor bits are clearly seen…

Phosphor of new G2 emitter looks rough but in fact it is very gentle and soft comparing to old one (which is clearly seen after each de doming process).

Sorry Djozz… I am brutally honest.

P.S.

This picture from this thread also shows difference (left is good old; right is new one with rough orange phosphor which remains ugly when de domed and it makes die projection very dirty in aspheric flashlight :confounded: Sure you guys will not notice that in reflector which is more suitable for “new guy”).

Judging from the pattern of dots, this looks like the “old style” to me.

FWIW, the two “new style” S4 2B emitters I have tested had ~90% of the lux and similar amp draw as the “old style”. 167Kcd in C8 with stock lens. 99Kcd in EE X6.

Sorry but it ain’t.
I am always amazed by human perception… It is funny thing

Different phosphor layer on new XP-G2 guys… Looks rough but it is soft especially with hot de dome like Djozz did  When you de dome a lot of phosphor stays trapped in a silicone cap. I really suggest chemical de doming on new ones.

With the old style there are 3 or 4 dots across between the bond wires (depending on which row of dots you count). With the new style there are 5 or 6. In djozz’s pic there are clearly 3 and 4 dots between the bond wires. How many dots do you see?

Yes you are right about dots…

But judging ugly and rough phospor leftovers on de domed emitter I vote for “new one”. Now we will wait for Djozz to say which emitter did he take cause it really is funny…

Dot size seems like old one. Phosphor layer ain’t

I always get very clean projection with old ones and messy projection with new ones very similar like in Djozz photo.

You mean how the edges are sort of ragged?

Yes… That and reddish phosphor leftovers on de domed emitter. If you have old and new at home you can easy spot phosphor layer difference.

EasyB, you noticed that correctly: old style dot pattern.

Ok, here’s part of the story (feel like a detective):
*some time ago I ordered 10 pieces S3 3D that came in two pieces of reel with 5 leds each, one marked S3 and one S4. I did not think much of it.
*not long ago I ordered another 10, came again in two pieces of 5, both marked S4. Now I noticed the new style and I wrote a post in this thread.
*the mod I did yesterday was done with the S4 piece of reel from the first order, and I assumed that it was new-style, but that piece of reel appears old style after all.
*the phosfor type on all leds is exactly the same and matches the type of phosfor from the discarded new style S4 2B leds that I got from l.i.

So it seems that 1)the change in phosfor type and the change in dot pattern did not happen simultaniously, 2)that the old-dot-pattern/new-phosfor type 3D is throwing pretty well, although not exactly measured 3)I did after all not test the throw of the new style dot-pattern S4 3D.

I saw your post about the S3 3Ds and ordered 2 from intl outdoor. I received one new style dot pattern and one old style.

Djozz is detective  ,

 XP-G2 dynasty continues.

I also had good old S3 3D(without rough phosphor) but I think it did not managed even to out throw old S2 1A and has very warm tint so if new S4 3D is same but now with rougher phosphor it will go down to my emitter priority list.

Djozz please report any new testings… Especially new style dot-pattern S4 3D.

Djozz,
Sorry for bothering you but have you done any additional tests with this or any other suitable emitter that could replace old s4 2b but with single cell fet driver?

Hi l.i.
No, I did not investigate this further, and also have not come across a suitable replacement for the old S4 2B

One possible lead: I bought a triple flashlight from the Jaxman aliexpress store (Jaxman E2L) that has 1A-tint XP-G2 leds, in the webpage they claim it is S4 bin, and I confirm that they are old-style. I trust Jaxman a bit better than all other flashlight manufacturers that they do not lie about their emitter bins. Perhaps you could ask jaxman via PM (they are BLF-member jaxman) if they would sell you some of their stash of emitters that they use for the E2L (if 1A tint does it for you)

I have in the meantime put new leds in my E2L and have stored away the 3 leds that came off, if I have some time for it the coming period I will do a B158 pill with it and measure throw. In the worst (and most expensive) case you could buy complete E2L flashlights and get 3 emitters per flashlight (you will have to heat up the complete flashlight head to unsolder the leds, the ledboard will not come out because of glue) and free triple hosts for other projects.

I think jaxman’s are the version you describe as “old-dot-pattern/new-phosfor type” .

Aargh…
I’m confused…
Or not?

I understand there are 3 kinds of XP-G2 then:

- Old, with smooth phosphor and grid of holes and lower Vf (those are good)

- Less old, with rough phosphor and grid of holes, i don’t know about the Vf of those (are they good?)

  • New, with rough phosphor and no (visible) grid of holes and higher Vf (not as good)

Is this correct and / or how about the ‘less old’ version?

The new ones don’t necessarily have a higher Vf. All the ones I’ve tested do ~4.3A with a 30Q, which is similar to the old ones.
