Here’s is a photoshopped picture from above, the leds were in the same picture so with the same magnification, with dome on. The difference could be caused by the die size but the dome curvature could also be somewhat different.
This is all the time I have today for this, maybe next week…
In general I have more time for talking on BLF (I can do that on my tablet while leisurely sitting on the couch in a sort of social configuration with the family ) than time for doing mods and tests (for that I retreat to my ‘man corner’ of the living room sitting with my back towards the family and with my mind completely absent)
Thanks djozz, once again! Excellent info. From what’s been described, the Vf increase at high amps is the main problem, as you said. The tint is another issue related to the design change CREE apparently did.
Hope they don’t start killing the XP-L’s in the same way - I’m afraid this might be a new design change, a shift in manufacturing the dies. Least with the XM-L2’s, the highest U4 bins seem to come back in performance with a lower Vf than the U2’s of the 2nd generation, and U3 generation.
So… the Vf is higher… so its less efficient… the die is bigger… so it throws less… it cant handle being “overdriven” as much… and it goes a horrible bright green (albeit a VERY intense hotspot of green) after being dedomed…
…and all this so that its ever so slightly brighter… Doesnt sound like an improvement to me…
I think I might just go with XP-L HI LEDs from now on… not such a tight beam as DD XP-G2’s, but at least the total lumen count is higher to compensate…
Nothing wrong with XP-L ’s except throw potential…
We must see results of de domed 70CRI Nichia 219C or Osram Oslon 3rd Gen 6500k. They are both better performer(in dome on version) tha XP-G2 S4 2B as reported by Djozz…
XPL HI is a bad idea, at least at the current HI development state, an example
today i had to build 2 C*s - one with arround 4500k dedomed former 2A XML2 emitter and one with Hi V2 1A emitter, i havent measured the lumen output, only candelas but its quite obvious: 95k mcds for XPL HI running at 5.7 amps vs 120k mcds for the XML2 based light( it was running at 4.9 amps)
DDed XPL is quite a diffrent story though, yet it couldnt reach a nice S2-S4 binned emitter
Those are impossible to be found, i actualy have never seen that listed anywhere
stock of emitters
Thought I would share this if you need older stock

Well, the shipping kills that deal for me, the last time that i checked it was like 70 USD for 10 emitters
Of course we can always accept more BLF friendly shipping options :sunglasses:
Those issues started maybe late november so prolly its reet is from the old batch
Hank`s reet picture is an old one, he never changed it since he annoyce those
If Hank claims than I will confirm that I ordered at:
13.02.2016 was terrible order money waste for me. So it can’t be old reel, and you can tell that to Hank
27.10.2015 was ok
02.09.2015 was ok
Hank needs to reply in this thread, and not only that. He got to appeal to Cree to make us good old batch of XP-G2 S4 2B emitters.
Welight also needs to confirm that he has good old XP G2 S4 2B
You guys have thread here and you can compare your reels to real old XP G2 S4 2B
There should not be mistake when ordering it cause no one likes to loose money. And new XP G2 S4 2B is total money waste.
I would toss them in a trash if I did not send them to Djozz (literary… I would really do that).
Another option is to check the reels you have in stock that you mentioned above for the old/new production type by comparing the leds (using a simple loupe or stereo-microscope) with the pictures above. (but that involves some extra effort of course).
If anyone is considering to order XP-G2’s from Fasttech (Cree XP-G2 S2-1A) as a substitute for the former king - don’t do it. They are not in stock. Ordered couple of these seven days ago and had to cancel my order today.
Well, since i am buying half a dozen emitters bins from FT i would say they are usualy non stocked waiting a week for the shipment isnt an issue, the issue would be lower performance or something, like they did that to S2 2B
One shouldnt expect much from those S2 1A, yet 30-40% of them are good enough, and some are exellent
