Damaged LED

I don’t have a lot of experience with LED damage so I wanted to ask here.

I received a used LED and it arrived damaged, I was wondering if you could tell me what you thought might be the cause. It arrived in a small sealed capsule, and there were no bits of LED dome floating around loose in there.

Could this have been damage from exceeding voltage / amperage / temperature ratings? Or is it pretty certain that it was just smashed?

Does it still work?

looked like it was dropped… aka smashed. :weary: If it was burnt out, given that damage, there would have been obvious burn marks at the wires inside the LED. Do you have a high power magnifying glass to see if the wires themselves are burnt out?

Smashed! Nothing thermal or electrical does this.

Was there anything to protect the LED from banging against the top of that container?

I was afraid of that! Nope it doesn’t work. It an old veleno designs dropin. And with my luck It wouldn’t be as easy as soldering a new LED onto it would it?

There was a foam donut around the LED tower and another on the contact plate on the rear. But to fully isolate the LED from the container it would have had to have both donuts on the front end. What confuses me is that it was in the small plastic egg but there were no broken pieces of the dome in there.

This.
Pure mechanical damage.

No, you have to remove all that crap at the top (potted emitter), you can try to reflow just the emitter but it will be a big PITA…

I’ve seen that before on one of my lights. I wasn’t looking at the centering of the reflector, and tightened down the bezel and reflector on top of it.

Thanks for the comments guys. I will start the process on the USPS insurance, hopefully that won’t take forever! Was hoping to give my E1E some new life but it will have to wait until another one of these pops up…
