You won't see many squirrels that colour in the US. Long story but my local council feeds contraceptives to every grey squirrel it finds. The reds are an endangered species here. Mostly thanks to originally American greys which carry squirrel pox which is harmless to greys and lethal to reds.

In my country red (brown?) are the only ones that can be seen (quite regularly). When i test my flashlight im sure i often annoy some by checking treetops in the vicinity. Plenty of gray Nutria around however. Many uneducated think those are mutated rats (radioactive waste or something, lol).
my north american hunter's encyclopedia claims that when red squirrels and gray squirrels fight the red squirrel tries to castrate the gray.
I have no idea if that is true or not, but it could explain why every time I've seen them in close proximity, the gray is running from the red (even though it is about half the size of the gray)
Nowadays they come in and take them right from our hands.
