A lot of companies don't have the logistics set up to sell spare parts. I think they would have taken care of you if it was just a matter of walking over to the parts bin, grabbing the part, and mailing it to you. Most likely, the people you talked to probably don't have physical access to the parts inventory, and the people who do probably don't have the authority to ship out individual parts to regular customers.

If you call any company that doesn't have an established parts sales system and ask for spare parts, you'll most likely get a similar response. Usually, that's not because they don't care about their customers, but it's because selling spare parts is not a normal part of what they do everyday and so they don't know what the answer is and they have to take the time to find out. My guess is that for every email you exchanged with them, there was three or four internal emails among Fenix employees trying to find the best answer for your request.
Ok, I took some advice and contacted Maglite with who I am and links to several of my builds here. After about two weeks I got a reply stating that my information would be passed on to Corporate legal and they would contact me about it if need be. It stated that any mod was something legal needed to see.
Well, I know lawyers, so I can see where it might go, if it ever does go anywhere. The nice thing is that it would take so much time and red tape I would be dead and buried before they got round to it, LOL.
Actually I don't worry about it. Modding is most likely a topic that could legally be an issue for the original Mfg. I am sure they would not want any lights out there, with their name on it, that did not have their blessing, so letter of the law, I'm illegal.
I am not going to worry about it, or stop what I do. Too many others have done much worse things to Maglites and are still doing them, so I imagine it was just a dumb comment on the part of the person who replied.

Long story, thought they might be interested. Dumb idea, but not the first dumb idea I have had, won’t be the last either.
If a company sells parts for a light, they are implying that it is ok to take apart that light and access those parts. Most of us in here KNOW WHAT WE’RE DOING but we’re a minority compared to the total sales. There are a lot of people in this world who meddle with things they shouldn’t and manufacturers know they are the ones that all the rules must apply to since they are the majority of customers. If I were to manufacturer a light, I’d seal it to make sure parts are inaccessible to people.
Not that dumb actually.. but I guess you'd have to be a high-paid engineer working for them to be taken serious. ;)
If I do a mod to my car, the mfr doesn’t care, even if I publicize it (think of all the car shows). Maglite seems very paranoid for some reason. Gotta wonder if they had some past bad experience.
Maybe it's because OL sold of few of his mods.
I doubt that Mag cares a whole lot about owners modding Mags for themselves. But if someone mods a Mag and sells it, Mag probably want to make sure that they are covered regarding product liability. They probably want to make sure that if some poor unsuspecting soul buys an ROP hot rod and it blows up in his hand that Mag doesn't get named in the lawsuit.
