Does more outdoor / artificial light at night help cause macular degeneration?

Here is the article and published in JAMA Network Open

South Korean researchers found that people living in areas of that country with the highest levels of streetlights and other artificial light had more than double the odds for AMD, compared to those living in areas with the lowest levels.

For his part, Gorski stressed that the study “does not show any causality. It doesn’t show or prove that outdoor light causes macular degeneration. It is the first study that does show that there may be a link.

Doesn’t prove causality, but something to keep in mind.

I just read a little about it. Never heard of it before. What makes you think brighter street light can make it worse? From what I read, its either hereditary, comes with age, or from smoking. I did not see anything related to street lights.

Can you post the articles you are referring to. I would love to read them.

Article is linked above.

There is something really stange about the study. Outdoor lighting is used when its dark out. How do they know all those people over 50 years old spent a significant time outdoors at night.

I am not an expert but it seems to me being outdoors on a sunny day can cause more eye damage than being indoors at night.

I think its more likely that they were indoors drinking and smoking that caused the increased cases of AMD.

What do you think, is my analysis wrong?
