exactly, rabies aside, it is almost always the fault of humans, most likely the owner, sometimes the person getting attacked, occasionally people from previous experiences, dogs will never naturally just attack humans under normal circumstances, it just doesnt happen, neither do wolves.
I’ve been using a D18 XPL-HI and the floody optic as my dog walking light. I wanted a wall of light to illuminate everything in front of me but only out to like 25 yards. The D18 seems to do that nicely.

These statistics are just in this country. Two aggressive at large ambush charge attack Shepherd breed self defense shootings in 11,500 miles walking is what I got. Dogs that look as maximally vicious as can possibly be behind a fence when any pedestrian walks by: A common event. The two that I shot were the ones that were criminally negligently allowed to get out. Ask the 100 police officers who every day shoot dogs if they were attacked by a loose vicious dog. Or maybe police shoot 100 dogs every day in the USA because the police just did not like the happy doggie. Hmmmm. I wonder what the reality is.
When dangerous dogs viciously kill and severely maim innocent victims, the police report will usually say: “Tragic accident due to unknown cause.” The correct reason is because an innocent baby or child or grandmother or other completely innocent human being was in proximity to a dangerous, unpredictable and/or sometimes predictably dangerous dog.
I got my GoPro camera recently. Visualize a mean, vicious dog who “just got out” and attacked the first pedestrian it saw, and you will get the picture. Or, you can just blame the victim child, little old lady, infant, or baby that gets turned into a pile of bloody chopped meat.

Ok, the owner should not have let its un- and/or predictably vicious dog out, so it could just simply sic itself on me.
I’d take a look at ThruNite T1. I bought them for my mom and dad for that exact reason. It probably hits every box minus your throw. It is a super small light after all.

FWIW, on the 100 meter throw of the SC31 Pro, I double checked it last night and I feel comfortable with that statement. My silver Convoy C8 XP-L HI did a touch better at that distance but the SC31 pro was amazingly close and of course was noticeably brighter for much of the area closer in. In my case either of those lights are back up lights for the purpose of walking the pooches though and I really don’t use them all that often for that purpose any more. Much rather have hands free than have that much throw. Always nice to have the throw if I need it — two lights are better than one…
A good alternative is a boruit bc10, floodier than the q8 but doesn’t throw as far.
But usb chargeable, and slim.
I’m grabbing the Astrolux FT02s, runs on Anduril, usb charging, slimmer with similar throw but more output.
Currently on pre order, but should be coming soon.
I keep checking back on this thread to see if y’all ever come up with a flashlight that will walk my dog for me, but my disappointment is deepening. Come on, step it up, folks.
Would you consider an Astrolux EC03 ? its a fantastic little light with a good mix of spill and throw.
I think you got it right the first time.
Floody headlamp + throwy light of your choice. Based on the ranges you state and size of light you say is too bulky, a GT mini sounds about right. You cant really have too much throw. D4Sv2 also could be winner if distances over 100m truly arent needed.
Something like the D4V2 is very far from madness’ description. I personally use an old R50 (original version from 2016) just for the wide spill and the range. Still not even close to a C8 in terms of throw of course, but able to follow the dog for a few seconds until I get him to stop. At the same time, the wide (and bright enough) spill allows seeing animals before my dog smells them. No ramping tho.
I guess the characteristics needed depend on the dogs personality and abilities. If he runs and doesn’t listen, he needs a GPS tracker. Or a leash.

I’ll start off by saying I’m pro 2ndA and 100% for the empowerment of an individual to adequately defend themselves and their natural rights. I also will say I have two dogs. Well trained, happy, and energetic. They are however mutts. Mixed breed, though visibly in large part of a ” ” violent ” ” breed. Many times I/they have been given trouble because of their apparent breed and assumptions based on that, despite their individual demeanor. When in appropriate environments, of which I seek for them as a priority, they are allowed off leash. At times on hikes we will run accross the occasional human - thankfully never someone with an approach like yours - and there havent been any incidents, unless shoe sniffing/licking and tail slaps are considered an attack.
In context to this topic and thread, I’m here to say that I think you could benefit from different tact, at the very least. First off - the obvious - this was a post asking for advice on a flashlight forum by a presumably conscientious owner in a rural and likely familiar environment (in a different country than you) what torch could fit his illumination needs. Responding to this thread just to state that your (answer?) to this is a firearm and video camera?? Honest full disclosure - my first reaction to this response was angry and combative to put it kindly. With more thought and honest reflection, I’m giving you the benefit of doubt and will ask questions before accusing. I invite you to PM me if you have objections, in order to respect SBs rules and the OPs topic, I’m not going to have continued exchange here.
I ask you though to reflect on your interjections, how they may be percieved (do they misrepresent you?), and if this is an appropriate place to share these opinions.
Like you OP, I walk my dog at night (gets dark at 5PM now) off-leash out in the fields/trails here in the countryside. Personally, I like having my hands free at all times even when my pup is off leash, so my main light is a Thrunite TH30 headlamp; it’s crazy bright and will hold high mode (1200LM) for an hour. I carry a Rofis MR70 in my coat pocket but I plan on swapping that out for a thrower soon as the headlamp is already flood-y enough. Kinda eyeing the Wowtac A4v2 since it’s so compact, available in NW, has regulated output and is pretty cheap.
