Dogs and power banks

4 Thanks

There are a lot of if-not’s in this story. This outcome could have been avoided in so many ways.
The owner left the cord in the charger, and when the dog chewed on it, it caused the cell(s) to short.
Thank God no pets, or humans, were hurt. I bet the insurance company uses this video to avoid paying.,

To prevent this sort of things from happening, I am the only person in da house that uses rechargeables.
If the dog, or the missus, want to chew something, it will be primaries only.

Food for thought… its estimated that less than 1% of all lithium battery fires are reported or make it into the media. I treat mine as I do my firearms. Nuff said.

Lesson learned: don’t get a dog.

But joke-mode off: that could have ended really badly. Lithium batteries are safe, but don’t like damage (and internal short circuits).

My dog loves to chew up USB cables… Good thing I don’t leave any plugged into anything when I am not actively using them.

Curious though, shouldn’t the BMS in the power bank kept this from happening?

As soon the cells are shorted internally a thermal runaway occurs. In this case no BMS or other protection circuits will help preventing a fire.
In this case the seemingly powerful dog‘s jaws punched the metal casing of the cells so violently that the shorting created the fire. If there were pouch-type Li-polymer cells this is very easy for such a predator like a dog.

I need to watch again… first look I thought the dog was just chewing the cable… but yeah I see the critter was chewing on the case. Once it punctured the cells… BMS is out of the picture completely.

For me the dog chewed first on the cable (he brought the powerbank to the bed on the cable connected to it), but then the video cut and it looks like the dog punched one corner of the powerbank with his teeth. Sparks and some sort of hot air coming out of this corner, then the fire starts.

I smell an insurance job. Seems like The Dog purposely brought that powerbank to the most… flammable… part of the house.

Probably dragged those 2 mattresses right next to the couch, too.

Yeah obviously fully planned arson case… :japanese_ogre:

Of course it’s all staged lol.
Crazy training job for the dog. :open_mouth: How to explain the dog to take this particular powerbank, putting it onto highly flammable stuff, chewing on the (maybe) weakest point on it, I think I am not able to manage this

My mutt got hold of a NiMH cell once and must have decided it had excellent chewfeel because he dented the casing all to heck.

I used to do that to pen-caps when I was a kid. Write Bros were my favorite.

They were like rawhide chew-toys to me.

Did it to the pen itself, too, and it kept others from swiping my pens. No one wanted chewed-up pens…
