Early 1900's(?) flashlight on Ebay--still works!

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.” I guess this is true for flashlights!

Stumbled across this (was not looking for it):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-CHALLENGE-FLASHLIGHT-Pat-date-1921-WORKS-21-long-8-D-batteries-/140942370451

I have never seen a flashlight older than this. Didn’t really know they had them back then!

I was struck by how much it resembles high-end flashlights of today, from D-Cell Mag-Lites to today’s long 2x or 3x 18650/26650 throwers. And surely this was a high-end piece ‘back in the day’! There is no exact date of manufacture but here is the description given:

Antique Challenge Flashlight…uses 8 “D” Batteries (Not Included)…Pat. date on Flashlight Dec. 20 1921……scuffs and a few dents in the almost 22” long chrome handle…made in the USA…

It’s not clear to me which feature exactly is patented.

Quite entertaining! Still works!

I am not sure, but the light show, PAT DEC 30 1921, that dosent mean that the light was build in that date, I had I few of this lights when I was 15 years old or something… 24 years ago

I would have bid but for the shipping……

I’d love to mt-g2 it. J)

I wonder when “flashlights as we know them” were really available!

Patents usually expire around 20 years, right? So… I wonder, at least: before 1950, or after?

Also saw this, maybe not as old, but check it out: extension tubes! Lol!

Vintage Nickel Plated Brass 9 D Cell 24” Flashlight

I’m guessing it must’ve been the “monster thrower” or “extreme flashlight” of its day. Just conjecture.

ChangChung, I can tell you, you certainly had better flashlights than me growing up! I was stuck with the plastic 2x C or 2x D cell plastic pieces of junk in the ‘tool drawer’ dad got in the kitchen, which would glow faintly when turned on, then flicker out! And no fresh cells in the home.

If you guys remember the plastic Radio Shack giveaway flashlight they used to do about once a year, I thought I was living high on the hog with that! Multi-cell, big reflector, “giveaway” build quality and of course 1 mode! Friend had one, his batteries leaked onto himself and his sleeping bag in the middle of a night on campout…

I actually think one reason I might like flashlights so much today, is because they were so bad when I was a kid and needed them wanted a good one badly. I would’ve freaked just with an SK68 clone on a single alkaline.

Cool, the classic plunger shape

I have a ’40s flashlight
