Easy upgrade for Convoy S2+ owners or modding beginners

Like many here, I own multiple S2+’s and Convoy’s in general. I really like the lights, but my biggest gripe is the lack of moonlight on their stock drivers. The output and performance is fine, but I miss moonlight.

My 2nd gripe is only XM-L2 emitters are available. I like the choice of tint, but I don’t always want a large LED in a small tube light.

This is something I should have done ages ago.

S2+ host (bought as a 8*7135 from Banggood with CW XM-L2)

Driver Qlite 3.04A $4.19 shipped (Int’l Outdor)
LED on star - Nichia219BT D220 (min 90 CRI) $.4.98 shipped (Int’l Outdor)
Clip $0.88 shipped (bought as a pack of 10 from Simon via Aliexpress)

Such an easy mod, unscrew the pill and remove the old driver. Mine was soldered to the pill, rather than by use of a retainer. Remove old star. Fit new ones. I did put some electrical tape over the contacts on the star, as the Noctigon is a little higher and it wanted to foul the reflector and short.

I also added an XM-L to XP-G centring ring. I’ve used these in the past and not liked them on larger deeper reflectors. But I tried with and without it on the S2+ and it seemed to work better with it in terms of beam profile and I could visually see no difference in output.

To get moonlight all you need to do is bridge the 4th star on the driver to the negative.

And job done.

You’ll have a light with similar output to the original XM-L2 version, thanks to the slight increase in tailcap amps. A lovely beam profile (IMO nicer than the stock S2+) and wonderful high CRI tint.

And that all important moonlight, which works superbly on this. It’s almost identical output to my Sunwayman V11R NW on low.

Arguably I think this makes for a nicer light than the BLF A6…. :stuck_out_tongue:

Beam shots to follow.

I think the Qlite is a great option with that moonlight low mode…

Re: the XM-L to XP-G centering ring; FastTech used to sell some good ones, but they switched their stock to some that weren’t nearly as nice. When I use these, I file them down with an emery board to shorten the top rim and fine tune them to get the best pattern possible.
