Ebay Q5 300 lumen Headlamp

I bought one of these.

Here it is apart

It came with a Q5 high/Lo/strobe.

So the positive goes down the tube to an isolated piece of circuit board, only has contacts on one side. That in turn goes back up the tube via the coated aluminum tubing. just the ends conductive. This comes back to the middle of the light via a little ring of circuit board with the spring precariously perched ontop of it. This in turn comes into contact with the driver to power it up. In stock form there was not thermal adhesive/grease under the led to the pill. ontop the led there is a clear piece of plastic and then a chrome plate and then a white retaining ring holding the emitter to the pill. On the original there was a locating ring that was glow in the dark.

It now has a 6x7135 105c driver and an XM-L2 T5 5B1

It is my first neutral/warm light and I really like it. Call me converted.

It stays cooler with the new setup than the old while making a lot more light. I'm not sold on the zoom function yet as its my first zoomie as well but its got a nice smooth beam pattern. It lost a little bit of throw focus from LED to LED but thats not a problem for me. I had added a blob of solder on the positive end so I could run flat tops but decided to take it back off tonight because I would rather have a protected cell on my head.

I paid $13.17 for the light and just under $7.00 for the driver / emitter from fastech. all came really fast. The light was in the USA already thats why I paid a little more.

I want to recreate something similar but based on 4xaa format with a drjones driver. Gotta sell some things first to fund it. Already have a head strap coming and scored an awesome 4x aa apex battery pack for the project. Looking for a cheap host or make one. SO i can choose eaither an 18650 pack or 4x aa.

It can run a long long time on medium and only gets moderately warm, on high its warm in a couple of minutes. On low it should run like all day or something ? Using a nitecore 2300mah protected cell.

anyhow I also soldered the tail switch components together and on the ring shaped unit with the spring...that contacts the driver I added a little brass top plate to the spring itself as to not dig into the driver too much. The driver has had the spring removed for this light as it came.

kool, thanks so much for information!

I just ordered 3 of these for me and my caving buddies. Looks like I will be converting them to warm XML2’s. I’m a sucker for an S6 led

I have recently taken a keen interest in zoomies. While their output is not up to par with their reflector counterparts, they provide a BEAUTIFUL artifact free wall of light. This is PERFECT for caving.

Just figured I’d drop in, and say this mod was a success(apart from the stupid pcb power ring, it busted, so I ran a direct wire). I know you already gutted yours, but I don’t mind an 18650 light on my head. I just got back from a cave run at Donahue Cave in Bedford, IN, and this thing worked FLAWLESSLY! Had a total of 8 protected panny’s for the trip, and only used one. I’m running a 8x7135 Qlite, pushing an XML2 U2 1C on a Noctigon XM16, epoxied to the pill. Focus was pretty terrible, so I put some diffusion film on the lens. Now its a super floody beam, which is awesome for the caves. Ran on medium(25% mode), most of the time and only used one battery for the entire ~5 mile excursion. Thanks again for the info, this will now be my go-to headlamp!

Here’s a nice formation atop a large shelfstone.
