It’s been a couple decades since I did any self defense training, but I thought that a yawara/kubaton was for breaking bones, not penetrating strikes. You guys are saying these tactical pens work well for either type of strike?
I’ve always thought that knives make poor defense weapons because for them to be effective, it has to be lethal, and if you are going for lethal, there’s much better weapons. Also, I believe most of the time it isn’t necessary to send your attacker to his maker for the poor choice of throwing a punch at you or something. But I’ve always been a big fan of the kubaton, which gives you lots of self defense options.
I’m a small guy, can’t carry much bigger without printing. Soon as they pass open carry, I have either my sig GSR1911 or a kimber 1911 that will be rocked out in a level 3 hip holster.
to be fair though, my lil grendel carries 10+1 380’s, and is the size of a kimber LCP!
Tactical pens are basically kubatons with pointy ends, so they can be utilized as a traditional kubaton would be with joint locks and breaks, but can also be used as a pointy object for going all pokey-pokey.
the zebra isn’t quite as long as a tactical pen would be, nor as heavy, but is plenty strong enough for penetrating strikes, and maybe basic locks. It’s going to penetrate before it breaks a bone though.
See above. Tactical pens are basically designed for self defense without arousing suspicion…although nowadays, they’re semi-common enough that people are going to recognize them for their alternate purpose.
A knife is more likely to be lethal than a gun, particularly in unskilled hands, but slashes are slightly less likely to be lethal than stabs. Not everyone has as easy access to firearms as people do in America.
Anyone who used a knife in response to a punch would rightly be sent to prison for a very long time. Lethal force is only appropriate in response to a lethal threat.
Carrying anything here with the intention of using it for self-defense is an offense. Is it a pen or a 'pointed article'? Whilst they can be bought here, these kubotan-style pens are just below the legislation radar...
The Zebra F-701 has plastic core and 2 part outer sleeve. The stainless steel looks thick but actually isn’t.
“The thickness illusion is due to a right angle flange at the end where the writing tip attaches.” Zebra F-701 Tactical Pen? Still mostly plastic.
It seem many have modded the F-701. You’d think they would have noticed the tip screws into plastic and investigated further.
I think the 2 part outer sleeve is the biggest failure to me. With force it could break in half there.
Its a shame, it looked nice.
hopefully it never comes to tbat point where we have to rely on a pen , and agreed as far as training goes in my way past training before tactical pens were taticool we used just standard pens to invoke compliance and the smaller the surface area contacting the pressure points wether it be a nerve or artery the greater amount of force in a more focused point but again this was close to 20+ years so I may be way off base:-)
True Knife statistics are impossible to know because the use of knives is so common and routine that people sober up, patch the cut or wound and never go to the police, but in spite of that, in 1992 3,100,000 knife wounds were officially treated in America.
In that year of 1992, only 4095 people died from knife wounds.
I also disagree with your statement about being attacked with fists not being cause for using a self defense weapon, I understand what you mean if you are talking about guy stuff and family fights and so on, but when attacked by strangers or someone seriously attacking you, no matter who they are, there is nothing that says that anyone, has to meet the beast on the street, or the mugger or killer on equal terms.
In America, in the ballpark of 800 people a year are beaten to death and you can imagine how many survive and never fully recover, or look the same.
That was a big part of the Trayvon Martin case here in Amurrica.
I’m sorry, but if it’s a “gentlemans duel” at a bar or something, then yeah, fists get met with fists….but if you come up and blindside me, or randomly attack me, unless you’re half my size, I’m going to consider you a threat to my life and well being, and will meet your aggression with appropriate force to defend myself.
