Hi i have a QP2A-X with a somewhat greenish tint. I prefer neutral white. Is an emitter swap easy to do? I run the light with a 14500 cell in the 1AA body. Not sure what size the LED MPCB is. Any tips would be great. Thanks.
Yes they can be modded, the trickiest part is getting the bezel off without scraping up the annodizing. It is usually glued down pretty well. After that the mod is pretty easy.
hmm i guess i should attempt to remove the bezel first before ordering any parts. Thanks.
certainly do-able.
I modded a ~5 year old Quark AAT with a neutral XPG3, in the brightest flux BIN I could easily source, mounted on copper.
They use red loc-tight on the bezel threads, which is basically glue. I heated it around the bezel little with a small butane torch, and then chilled it with an ice cube around the perimeter. This in theory anneals the loc-tight and makes it very brittle. I then used a pair of strap wrenches and torqued the snot out of it to get the bezel off. Easy mod, and it looks 100% factory too.
I often prefer this light to my manker E11… its been so bomb proof reliable for 5 years.
Yeah, same for my 2AA-X. Glued tight.
I put it in a vice with protective rubber and tried with a wrench. Didn’t budge. I guess heat is the only way as you said. Need to buy some strap wrenches too.
Whats the best flux bin for neutral white XM-L2?
Success!! Renewed love for the light now. No more ugly green tint. Fitted with XM-L2 T6 4C on a 16mm Noctigon from Mtnelectronics. Had to grind it down to 14mm to fit though. Messed up the head anodization but totally worth it.
4C would be perfect with a TIR instead of a reflector, but dunno what size the head is.
Reflector… OP or SMO?
It’s an OP reflector. Never thought of TIR! like a triple? the dia of the head is around 22mm so i’m guessing the reflector is 18. i run the light on 14500. is that efficient for triple emitters?
Sounds like a standard 20mm TIR might fit. Check the front glass, if 20mm, you’re good to go.
You got a huge variety of TIRs to choose from if so.
Cool. I’ve got to try this mod on one of my Quarks. Are there Nichia 219 MPCB’s that will work in this light, or is the forward voltage too different for it to work with the Quark’s driver?
Shouldn’t make a diff. Ain’t a FET driver as far as I know.
hi all. thought I would revisit the same thread and question after many years. I have enjoyed the Xml-t6 that I swapped in but feel bad every time I look at the light because I permanently mangled the head getting it off but oh well. Is there a another worthy emitter swap I can do that maintains the usage of the single AA and driver? Or would the gains not be worth it? I haven’t kept up with all the LED emitter advancements since then. Also, is there something I can wrap that head in to cover up my crime? I was thinking electrical tape but that gets icky after awhile.
That’s a great light! You have quite a few options to replace the XML.
Try a bit of aluminum blackening liquid. Aluminum oxidizes so quickly to air that I normally degrease and then apply the first coat with 1500 grit sandpaper and let the liquid set.
Every light reacts differently, and I’ve had great to mediocre results, but it’s what I would try first.
Guess I should have used the search more. Seems it’s not really a worthwhile upgrade when I read up on it.
