Ending the Confusion about Diffusion

An overdue thread that shows various ways diffuse your favorite flashlight.

I’d been playing with different diffusion techniques over the years , happily selling smaller sheets of diffusion film and filters to knock out the ugly green , DC-Fix Diffusion Film ,Amber and Zircon minus green filters
but also looking for creative budget ways to turn lights into lanterns too .

A few quick examples are

  • center → coffee creamer bottles . They happen to fit an extraordinary number of lights like Solarforce p60’s
Hanging around camp or over the poker table they just become big soft glowing lightbulbs without the nasty glare of a bad diffuser .
  • left → small hotel shampoo bottles . With some creative cutting these fit many , many lights and are small enough to easily be carried . The light can also be slipped down into them meaning they are not bigger than the light itself .
  • Front → 35 mm .film canister . Upside is they fit lits of lights and as you’ll see the straight walls of the diffuser makes them less prone to obnoxious glare .
  • Back right → is a plastic frosted votive candle holder meant to hold the cheap/ fake candles that run off of coin cells . They were sold from the Christmas tree shop and are impossible to find anywhere… But are the finest example of what a proper diffuser should look like . If someone sees a resemblance to the fireflies lantern option it’s because they absolutely understand what a perfect lantern should look like .

I really like using silicone end caps. Don’t have one on hand (will make another post when I find them), but this is what they look like.
