FireFlies ROT66 G2 - Is mine faulty?

Hello!

A few days ago I received my ROT66 G2 from Banggood.com, and was very excited to finally have a multi cell light. However, shortly after starting to use it, it developed a really bad flickering problem. I took the head and the tailcap off. I wiped off the spring board in the tail on the light, and wiped off the driver ring on the back of the head. I've had a look to see if there was any cracked solder or chaffed wires, but I couldn't see anything. I put the spring board back in and tightened the screws down tight, after which it hasn't flickered. Only once did I have to retighten the screws. So far, so good.

I took the light out for a night walk last night, along with the rest of my collection, one of which was my first torch: my MF01 Mini with 4000K 95CRI SST-20's, which I estimate to output between 4000 and 5000 lumens (based on the 5500 claimed lumens from the 5000K and 6500K SST-20's, and the fact that high CRI options tend to produce less lumens). To my complete surprise, when I set both my MF01 Mini and ROT66 to turbo, the MF01 Mini kept up with the ROT66, both in throw and output. For a light that claims between 12,000 and 14,000 lumens (for the 5000K XP-L HI's which I have), to be no better than one that only makes between 4000 and 5000 is completely shocking. Both lights had fully charged cells, the ROT66 having three Samsung 30Q Button Tops, and the MF01 Mini having Vapcell a G53.

So here's my initial question: is there a fault with my ROT66? It's the most expensive light that I own, and it's been nothing but a headache since it arrived. That's besides the fact that it's destroying the shrink wrap on my cells!

I would very much like to keep this light, but it's been completely underwhelming since it's arrived. Is this normal for these? I'm not adept with electronics by any means, but I would like to see if there's anything I can do to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi LumenFanBoy!
Welcome to BLF!

Is it possible that you have your light configured in the “muggle” mode, which limits the highest output?

I have a ROT66 G2 and it is an absolute beast, specially on Turbo!
Mine has SST-20 5000K but still it is plenty bright!

Please confirm is you have it set on the non Muggle mode.

Hope that is the case and soon you’ll see how bright it shines :+1:

If you can’t double click to get to turbo it’s probably in muggle mode. 6 clicks while off can change modes

"UI: Muggle mode Muggle mode is for lending the FW3A to others. It has a reduced output to make sure somebody won’t start a fire. An extremely simple interface with a limited brightness range — ~5 lm to ~240 lm, with slow smooth ramping and no blinkies. Persists after a battery change. MUGGLE mode ON: from OFF 6 clicks to enter MUGGLE mode OFF: 6 clicks to exit One click ON / OFF and HOLD to ramp up / down."

did your flickering stay fixed? i got a rot66 relatively recently (gen2 with no battery carrier, 219b), and tried cleaning the terminals and tried button tops and it flickers on high/turbo

The rear cap is responsible for the flickering of the light - set it in motion by unscrewing and tightening and you will see. I had the same problem with my rot66 g2

for gen2? i just removed it, nothing happened. i dont think it does anything other than water protection. light still turns on and flickers

it’s strange but in mine it caused problems and the flashlight did not flicker when loosening the back cap. Yeas it’s gen2

I occasionally have similar problems with mine.
The solution which works every time with mine is to unscrew both ends then screw them back together simultaneously as hard as I can tighten by hand.Simple and worth a try.
