Hello.
I’m trying to find some response about a MX991 upgrade but can’t seem to find a clear answer nowhere…
So if you don’t mind, I would like to ask you some questions;
I bought some years ago 3 MX991 for my kids to go to the scouts. They are 8-9-10.
I would like to upgrade the flashlights to something better.
Would you recommend to go to a 18650 battery?
Or maybe an adapter for 2 single AA batteries? Or what best option?
What kind of LED light bulb would you recommend? There are many on internet and I’m confuse of the best one to choose?
Is it necessary to change the light deflector? If yes, which one is recommended?
I would say, that I’m not trying to find a cheap option but really the best option.
I really apricate your help here and you’ll make 3 kids (and a daddy ;-)) happy!
If the kids and you are happy with the MX991, I would just get the AA adapter and call it a day.
Lumintop has the PK27. Simple 3 mode dual AAA light.
The ToolAA has a simple UI as well and takes one AA or 14500.
The Acebeam Pokelit AA and 14500 is simple as well. It’s on sale on Amazon right now for like $17
They make a dual AA version of it but I’m not sure of the price.
If they like that right angle type of light the Nicron N7 takes AA and 14500 as well.
Few choices from me. There are many other great lights. I like to keep things simple and the kids lose interest really quick when I try and explain how to use a ramping or complicated UI’s. Right now they all just have Convoy S2+'s with a 4 chip board set on single mode only.
I use the 55 lumen nite-ize drop in in mine, output is not impressive but is good for utility and long battery life. There is no need to change the reflector.
You can run your MX991’s on a protected 18650, 21700 or 26650 if you have the right adapter, but AA eneloops are fine if you don’t need as much run time. All of these options are much lighter than alkaline D cells and they don’t leak.
