Fun with elipitical optics

I struggled to find many pictures or posts regarding elipitical optics, so let me help fix that.

Down the road

I am looking forward to switching out the 2 amp driver for something with more juice. I had ordered a higher power driver but mistakenly ordered the eswitch version…

Yep, and they make great bike-lights!

I’ve always been a bit curious about these. Thanks for posting.

So I now have a justification for a Convoy S2+ SST-20 with this type of lens for my bike.

Nice

I think that for a walking headlamp a slightly eliptical lens would be nice. I even bought some for this use but didn’t get to the point of installing them.

Good subject, and a pretty nice example of an elliptical beam I must say!

I’m interested in trying the rectangular white flat in this light. I tried a white Xpe2 and the throw felt better but there was not enough output, that and the beam was VERY narrow, too narrow. The white flat should give good throw and the rectangular shape should help with the “thickness” of the beam.

I’ve only tried an elliptical optic in an S2+ triple. I didn’t find it had a substantial effect. I never pursued them more.

Your post above has made me reconsider. They seem to work really well with single emmiter. Thank you for shareing. :+1:

This is the 30mm optic from carclo, I believe the smaller tir optics have a much less pronounced effect. Emitter size and optic position makes a big difference too. The Xpe2 I tried created a VERY narrow beam, this xml hi has a much thicker beam. More then that this optic is not tight against the board and the beam is a bit thicker.

Do you mean that you would put the rectangular die perpendicular to the lens, so that the beam is taller but not as wide as in your picture?

Yes.

The small die size should give good throw, which is needed for my intended purpose. But, with the small die size the beam also gets very thin. Carclo reports nearly the same beam width between the small die E2 and the large die xml hi so I expect total beam width won’t really change. To me this would imply the Osram would be the best of all worlds for this use.

Xpe2 in the same optic. Sorry, only had the green emitter handy.
