FX-30 driver upgrade question

I am wondering if there is a way I can upgrade/mod this FX-30 driver to get more amp output? I was told that by adding more 7135 chips would get the amps up higher, but it appears that this driver has a different type of circuit. I had did a search for the F811AV part and it is a MOSFET chip. Would it be possible to solder more of these MOSFET chips on top of the existing ones on the pcb to get more current output?

Thanks,

Willie

You can do a resistor mod. This thread may help.
Results are spread all over the Convoy L6… XHP70 Beast! thread, like here or here.

If you want moonlight mode or program the driver yourself there is a 30mm FET+7135 Driver from MTN.

Ok, Thanks…Looks like using a 120 or 140 in parallel would be good. Not sure what the runtime difference would be for each value?

Does anybody know where I can buy these R120 or R140 resistors? And which one is a better choice for modding the L6?

Thanks in advanced!

BUMP

Aliexpress, eBay, local dealer. Size is 1206. Less than $2 for 100 pieces.

Whatever you want to achieve. Stock is 5 A and 3800 lm. Adding one R140 may give you 6.5 A and 4400 lm. R120 may give you 6.7 A and 4500 lm.

The highest current I have read about was 10 A (5400 lm) bridged with 100 mm AWG30.
Many lights are limited to 7.3 to 7.5 A without further modding the tailswitch.

Thanks TBone! I would imagine that R140 would be the best choice as I don’t think I will be able to see any difference in 100 lumens. But I will probably notice the 600 extra lumens from the stock driver. I will do a search for those 1206 resistors. Thanks for your info! :+1:

P.S. I take it that these 1206 resistors are the type? I imagine that the numbers that follow the R indicates the ohms? So a R140 would be 140 ohms? Thanks

1206 is the size.
It means 1.2 x 0.6 mm. (Just like XP-G LEDs are 3535 and XM-L are 5050)

R140 means 0.140 Ohms.

Hi Jerommel,

I’m glad you straightened that out. I would have ordered the wrong resistors. :person_facepalming:

So basically I am looking for SMD in a 1206 size that would be .140 Ohms? Would tolerance and wattage matter? I believe that the ohm rating you are referring to is 140mohm which is .140 ohms, I think…lol

I imagine that these would be the correct resistors for modding the L6 Driver boards?

Would R100 hurt the driver ?

Planning to do mine soon

Hi Nicolicous! You could use a R100 resistor. I have heard that you can also use a jumper wire as well. I was just considering the R140 resistor as the runtime should be a little better and also the lumen gain you will get using a R120 or R100 is not going to be very noticeable from the R140 mod!

The stock FX-30 driver pushes out around 5A/3,800 Lumens. Using an R120 in parallel with the 2-sense resistors should boost the current around 6.3-6.7A from what I had read. BFL member TBone states that using an R140 should boost the current to around 6.5A/4,400 Lumens. If the R120 does boost the current to 6.7A, you would only gain a couple of hundred extra lumens which you probably wouldn’t notice the difference from the human eyes.

I assume you could use a piece of 30awg and get the most current boost from the driver. TBone did mention that doing this would give you around 10A and 5400 Lumens, but other mods may have to be done as well to achieve this. Looks like the 30awg mod would give you closer to 7-7.5A. Just my 2 cents!

I will give it a go with R100 and 30awg

I dont intend to use it for long time on turbo rather showing off to my mates so they can say WoooooW :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re quite welcome there mate! Post back and tell how it turns out! Maybe you could take a photo of the beam before and after the mod. Just be careful not to get any solder from the resistors to the outer part of the driver!
