Grizzly's Acebeam EC20 Review – Good EDC with basic RGB

I love the simple cylinder design with the excellent captured clip and magnetic tailcap. I like the 18650 battery size and relatively easy USB-C charging. The RGB implementation needs work because it clutters the UI and can’t do much. If you really want the RGB, look elsewhere. If you just want a good, slim EDC light and you ignore the RGB, this is a pretty good option.

Woo! A new Grizzy review. Must be Christmas today!
Quite an interesting flashlight, nice to see manufacturers already installing freshly released emitters like the SFT25R (from what I understand, a 3535-sized SFT40 with a more focused beam, slightly higher range and lower max brightness, so something like a better CULPM1).

I like the use of emojis in the UI section and the “checklist style” rating of the UI.

The flashlight itself reminds me of the Skillhunt M200, but longer and more of a throwier EDC option (18650 version of the Sofirn SP35, beam-wise).

The tube swirly design is eye catching. To be honest, it’s hard to do a unique design nowadays, with so many other designs on the market.

I like the use of emojis in the UI section and the “checklist style” rating of the UI.

Thanks! I’m quite pleased with how that system is working for the UI and clip sections.

This is a nice light. Acebeam never disappoints. One of my all time favorite flashlight companies. They take this business seriously.

Main rotation is Low-Med-High:x:

  • It’s Low-Med1-Med2-High. That’s one too many levels so it’s a little

I will disagree on this point. The advancement through levels is quick, maybe 1 sec to get through all 4 of them. As such, I think it’s perfect with 4 main group levels.

If anything, it doesn’t have enough levels. Skilhunt’s usually have 7 [L1,L2] [M1,H1,H2] [T1,T2] and some Armyteks have 9 [F1,F2,F3] [M1,M2,M3] [T1,T2,T3]

Unprotected flat top cells are too short to work.

Even my button top is a little sketch. I don’t like hearing batteries rattling around.

but I have noticed a few miss-clicks here and there

My switch action is pretty poor and gets stuck

You can remove it [magnet] by removing the tailcap spring first

Are we sure? I thought it was glued in

My main problem with this light is the smooth ramping mode has “direction memory” like Convoy.

I love the UI and clip checklists, I’m personally not fussy about clips but I do have some definite UI preferences and having the lists makes it nice and easy to see if there are likely to be any niggles.

I was quite interested in this one, I’ve been hoping for Hank to do an 18650 triple as a more compact alternative to the D4V2 so this piqued my interest, however the dependence on protected button-tops puts me off.

The EC200 has also been tempting, but the UI seems a little erm, quirky, and there’s no throwy option.

If anything, it doesn’t have enough levels.

My thought is that if you want more than 5 levels you should use smooth ramping.

I don’t like hearing batteries rattling around.

Me neither. I always add a layer of masking tape around the cell if it rattles.

Are we sure? I thought it was glued in

Turns out it is glued. I assumed Acebeam wouldn’t be silly enough to glue it in for no reason, but I was wrong. I won’t make that assumption in the future.

Can you elaborate? It works exactly like I’d want on my sample. It defaults to ramping up unless you’ve just released and pressed the switch again within a short time, then it reverses.

Thanks! That’s the goal. It’s easier to search through than the UI chart if you’re looking for a specific behavior.

and there’s no throwy option

Well yeah. It’s an 18650 triple. They aren’t throwy even with throwy emitters.

A single emitter version would be cool.

A triple’s never going to be a proper thrower, but the EC20 SFT25R looks like it has similar throw to my D4K with the same emitters and I’ve found that to have enough throw for most purposes. I would love a single though, especially with a narrow TIR.

Oh I thought you were talking about EC20! My bad. That extra 0 makes a difference, lol.

No, it’s me being vague, sorry.

I looked at the Skilhunt EC200 as one option for a slim EDC light with some throw, but ruled it out on the grounds of the UI and that it’s too much of a flooder.

I thought that the Acebeam EC20 may fill that role as it comes with SFT25s as an option, but that’s going to be picky about batteries. Ideally I want to be able to use unprotected flat tops.

So far my D4K SFT25 is the one to beat for filling most of my wish list (compact, moonlight, can ramp from moonlight to low, battery indicator, some throw). The Olight Warrior Mini 3 would be almost perfect but it needs a proprietary battery and is very green.
