Grizzly's Noctigon KR1AA Review – Promising Enthusiast Carry with a Critical Flaw

Tl;DR: This is a fun, compact enthusiast light with Anduril 2 firmware, a great driver, RGB aux LEDs, and a lovely main LED. Overall performance is excellent, though I’d like more throw. The clip is superb and it’s small and light in the pocket. It’s just about everything an enthusiast could want in a daily carry light. Unfortunately it has one critical flaw; it turns on in my pocket. There’s no reason to carry a light that does that and has to be locked out when there are so many great options that don’t have that problem.

I wish Hank would implement a mod like this to increase the switch actuation force.

Thanks for the review!

Thank you for the review.

I’m surprised by how dim it looks compared to the Convoy T3 in the beamshots outside.

Yes, we now have the option to choose the tailcap with 2 times higher activation resistance.

That’s great news, thanks for the info. I’m looking to buy the silver color KR1AA - any idea when it’ll be back in stock?

That’s the problem with flood lights, they’re great for up close but suck outdoors.

They suck for work as an inspection light too (like peeking into dark spaces inside equipment etc) - I want to light that spot, not blind myself lighting everything

I asked specifically about the DA1K in that post so I’m not sure if the same applies for the KR1AA

Great review! My thoughts exactly. I can’t help but think the Sft-70 would give better beam distance. I haven’t seen any tests to confirm this though.

It’s strange because the T3 only has a 1.5A (4.5W) driver, while the KR1AA has an 18W driver.

My KR1AA has similar brightness to my S2+ with 519A and 5A (15W) driver.

Good catch. The T3 in the beamshots has a 5A driver. I’ll update the image captions to clarify.

1 Thank

Why is the T3 so much brighter? Are both lights at the same lumen level and camera settings?

The T3 he tested was the Ti model, which uses the 5A driver!

The beamshots with the draggable A/B slider weren’t quite the same size, so I resized the set with KR1AA NTG50 4200K vs Convoy T5 519A 15W. This makes it easier to compare the beam shapes. KR1AA (left) has a bigger LED with a wider/floodier beam, while Convoy (right) has a smaller LED with a narrower/tighter focus.

And, of course, very different beam colors.

The beamshots outside make the difference quite big.

True. But the KR1AA is designed more for indoor and short range use, so I don’t find outdoor shots very useful for it. That’s not what it’s for.

If I’m looking at things outside, I use a light designed for outdoor use instead.

I particularly like the Emisar D1 W1 in 18350 form, with ~120 cd/lm, for those moments when I need a few seconds of “hey what’s that over there?”. Can clearly see stuff half a kilometer away with that, even though it’s shorter than a KR1AA.

I live in large city with lots of light pollution, and I prefer a light with a relatively tight beam (TIR) that I can use indoor and outdoor.

for those of us who prefer not to use lockout, here are some options to increase switch pressure:

Hank now offers a new switch with double the resistance pressure, I highly recommend it. For people who dont want to mod their own switch I suggest just buying a complete new tailcap w the new Higher Pressure switch.

This link has info regarding the differences in activation pressure compared to the O ring mod.

I understand your position, but I find outdoor shots to be invaluable. I don’t want to try using a light for EDC only to find when I get home after dark that I can’t see further than my feet.
