Harbor Freight Leatherman clone - 40 Bucks

I deleted it from my cart when I realized it has no Phillips screwdriver… and fwiw, the tool is listed as weighing 11.5 ounces

I just weigher my OG Leatherman Wave, it is 8.5 OZ

congrats! does the Harbor Freight Gordon weigh 8.5 oz, like my OG Leatherman Wave?

The Gordon tips in at 8.5 oz. I’m very pleased with this quality Multitool … :beers:

excellent! thanks for your impressions
sounds like a great alternative to the OG Wave, for 1/3 the price.

I like that the Gordon (Wave clone) weighs 3oz less than the Daicamping, Rocktol, SQT-23, and Bubury

can you share which brands and what they weigh please?

Yes. I got the Rocktool. It is heavy and bulky. It has lost of “stuff”. Making the case pretty big, especially with the extra bit and saw blades included. I think not only the weight but the size would make it less than ideal to use. For instance, using it as a screw driver would be unwieldy. The Gordon I might carry. The Rocktool would be better in a glove compartment or tool box.

thanks for your thoughts… this video describes the type of steel in the Gordon compared to the Wave

I would be interested in your thoughts about the material

" 5Cr15MoV vs 420HC

Comparing 5Cr15MoV to 420HC steel, we can see that both are budget-friendly options. However, they differ in their characteristics:

  • 5Cr15MoV has better toughness and corrosion resistance than 420HC due to its higher chromium content.
  • 420HC has slightly better edge retention, but it compromises on corrosion resistance and toughness."

Obviously the guy doing the vide was pretty clueless about steel properties. The steel used in the wave and this Chinese steel are pretty close. Notice that what is said at one of these sites does not match what the guy said in the video (regarding toughness). The 5Cr15MoV is a little tougher… meaning less brittle (depending on who you believe and the heat treatment)). Probably better for pliers… It is also more corrosion resistant. Otherwise for this type of tool it is pretty much a wash. the 420 HC may retain an edge a bit better. For a knife I would pick it (but neither would be my first choice for a knife steel). I am not worried about the steel in the Gordon.

awesome! Thanks for the rundown

I trust your understanding of the materials,
better than the guy in the video, but Im glad he found out the material

The steel type is listed right on the front of the packaging…
