Has anyone ordered budget prescription glasses?

My previous glasses had been $400 at a glasses place, and then a bit less at Walmart but a screw came loose while I was on an airplane to Denmark and I had to hold a lens in with a band aid (The screws on the two sides did not match.). A friend recommended http://www.zennioptical.com. They were $85 there, and I have had no problem with them.
I had to measure the distance between my eyes with a mirror and ruler, using each eye to line up the ruler with its reflection. And I copied the prescription into the web page. It might be better to get the eye doctor to measure the distance between the eyes, but it was not on my prescription.

Read this if you are contemplating LASIK.

I did lasik long time ago, I wouldn’t do it again!

You can also measure by wearing a pair of glasses and using a erase-able marker pen to mark where the pupils are, then measure the distance between the points.

Has anyone here tried GlobalEyeglasses.com

Necrobump!
Recently, my mom got prescription glasses from Zenni, and she loves them.
I had an eye exam today, and I’m going to order glasses online.
My insurance will partially cover new glasses, but only if I shop in-network.
Not surprisingly, it’d be cheaper for me to pay out-of-pocket from somewhere like Zenni than to order from a company that’s in-network. :dollar:
I’m having some trouble choosing the ā€œperfectā€ frames, but I do like that Zenni has a pretty good selection, with many glasses having a lot of customer feedback. :eyeglasses:

I just poked around here, saw this, was reading through it, and yoiks! 2016…

Anyhoo, I wouldn’t do Lasik, but I did PRK and never looked back.

PRK doesn’t weaken the structure of the cornea by cutting that flap. What sold me was that the USAF will DQ you from ever flying a plane if you get Lasik, but will actually pay for you to get PRK.

Anyhoo, had it done ages ago, and like I said, never looked back. No more glasses, contacts, nuttin’. In fact, I was warned that soon I wouldn’t be able to wear contacts anymore because of neovascularisation from the lenses smothering my eyeballs, and to get used to the idea of going back to glasses.

That was a hard ā€œHell no!ā€ from me.

Having them sliding down my nose all the time? Getting ā€œeyebrow oilā€ smears on top all the time? Having my vision constantly worsen with glasses (even if ā€œjust at nightā€) whereas it stayed rock solid constant when wearing contacts all the time? Nope. Not gonna happen.

Anyhoo, just another option to consider…

I wore contacts for 25 years and got tired of needing to wear reading glasses and sunglasses so went back to glasses. I only need to wear glasses if I leave home and I’m ok with that.

What happened with me is that because I had such lousy vision to begin with, like -7 diopters, the first attempts at PRK ā€œgot it on the greenā€, in golf lingo.

Forgot what the exact vision was, but I did get a ā€œtouch upā€ in the ā€œworseā€ eye, and I think that’s the one that I had deliberately overcorrected to 20/15. I’d rather that if it does happen, I’d rather ā€œspring backā€ to 20/20 than 20/25.

So ended up with something like 20/15 in one eye, 20/30 in the other, and can read better in the 20/30 eye while seeing distance like The Predator in the other.

Decided to leave it, as that’s what they call ā€œmonovisionā€, that one’s better for distance and the other for reading.

Your brain ā€œtunes outā€ the blur in the other eye, so it looks clear for both reading and distance.

The biggest advantage is that with PRK, you correct for astigmatism, as it smooths out the peaks and valleys on your cornea which can’t be corrected by glasses or even contacts, at least not without spending a fortune on those lenses that do.

With astigmatism, some parts of your eye are a bit nearsighted and other parts are a bit farsighted, and ā€œcorrectingā€ vision is just a compromise of what ā€œlooks bestā€, even though it overall might look pretty lousy.

Like if you saw those decorative glass bricks with wavy surfaces, that’s an exaggerated version of what astigmatism is. PRK smooths down those surfaces as well as corrects, so you get corrected vision which you could never get with glasses or contacts.

got my new prescription last month and Zenni’s today.
$33 total including shipping. store wanted $255+tax.

I’m a fan of eyebuydirect.com.

I get most of mine here> Goggles4U

I just ordered from Zenni, and I went really cheap. :money_mouth_face:
I got prescription eyeglasses with clip-on sunglasses for $17.01 after a 10% off coupon.
After shipping, tax, and a California Rx Handling fee, the total price was $27.54
I hope I didn’t screw up by not paying extra for pricier lenses, but if I did, I’ll just place another order.

I had bifocal contacts like that for a while, 1 for near and one for fat. But it only worked for a while and my depth perception was off then. Now my vision is fine for up close and I only wear my glasses when I leave home and that’s not very often anymore.

I’ve ordered a few pair from Zenni. You really have to pay attention to the description of the glasses. I got one pair that didn’t have hinges. The arms just flex. However, when you open the glass case, they launch themselves out.

Other than they, they’re good quality. I like em

One problem with some Zenni frames (including the frames that I ordered) is that the tiny screws might fall out.

I’m going to order this eyeglasses repair kit.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJX9VL1S

Also, I’m going to order this purple thread lock.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZ4J1H8H

I’ve never ordered thread lock (like Loctite) before, but I have read about it many times on BLF over the years. :+1:

Goggles4U is good, too…like Ledhead said.
they are usually cheaper than Zenni for my prescription, and it shows.
but for ā€œaround the houseā€ or an emergency pair, they are fine.

I just went to the eye doctor yesterday and came home and ordered 2 more pairs of glasses from Zenni. One pair of progressive lenses for every day use. One pair of single vision lenses for when I’m working.

Total was about $175 shipped for both pair

Hmm…
I just checked out Goggles4U.
They have good prices (as does Firmoo), but neither of those sites have very many customer reviews for their frames.

I got mine from Sams Club. They were $200 for distant only, and $350 for progressive. This is after discount and with premium frames.

Very happy with them. Also bought the warranty for $75 which I already used one time.
