I was considering using S2 parts, for custom bike lights.
My first thought was to have LED and driver on each it’s own pill, for better heat distribution. But it got me thinking that any thermal protection wouldn’t protect the LED.
So which is the biggest sinner when it comes to heat. driver or LED?

I’ve never been concerned about making sure the driver doesn’t get over heated.
It’s alway about making sure the LED doesn’t get too hot. Hence a metal core printed circuit board, a direct thermal path MCPCB, thermal paste, a non-hollow pill or an integrated shelf, head cooling fins, etc.
