Help - Broken Monster Flashlight (MF Tactical) Recommendations

Hello,
I have a MF Tactical (Monster Flashlight Stingray I purchased in 2020. It uses 2 or 3 18650 batteries. The case say is stamped with 4 mode 2700 lumens. I literally used the light about 3 times and it quit working. Two of the 3 LEDs just have a faint blink. I sent it in for repair but was told the board is bad and they are no longer available. The light was returned to me but I hate to just throw it away. Does anyone know where I could get a new board? I’m not necessarily concerned with the number of modes. On and off is fine. It measures about 29.9mm. See picture.

We need more info. Since you said it uses 2 cells OR 3 cells, I have a hunch that they are wired in parallel–can you confirm this? What LEDs does it use, or do you have a photo of the head? Are the LEDs wired in series or parallel?

Also what is the switch type–electronic or mechanical?

Assuming (1) parallel wiring of batteries and (2) parallel wiring of 3V LEDs that (3) can take 7 amps of power each, controlled by (4) an e-switch, this driver looks promising: 30mm 3V 20.5A driver for L7 SBT90.2 - Convoy flashlight

I googled it, seems like it’s 2 or 3 cells in series, using an extender. I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but no way does that look like a $200 flashlight.

The company uses weasel language to imply the things are made in the USA, I’m 90% certain these are made in china products - not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, just they should be clear with their customers… If I’m wrong and they’re completely designed, machined, anodised, and assembled in the US, then I’ll apologise…

Now, as for your bad driver, can you post a photo of the light? It’s important to know if it’s got a mechanical clicky switch or an e-switch (like a computer mouse) as this will impact driver choices.

The best places for drivers nowadays is Convoy flashlight website, Kaidomain (despite awfully slow shipping), and AliExpress (awful website/app).

Also, welcome to BLF!

Thank you both for responding. Yes, it runs on 2 or 3 of the 3.7V batteries in series. Yeah, I’ve read other posts about their lights. I don’t see any markings on it so not sure. It didn’t last long so not surprised if at least the board was some junk. I was just hoping I could get a part to fix it rather than throw it away. The switch is on the side of the board. There is a mechanical button on the case that pushes the button on the board. See pics.

Thank you

Still unclear what the LED connection is, series or parallel. Having a mechanical-only switch is bad news–I don’t know of a mechanical switch driver with such a large diameter. I can imagine stripping this dead driver clean and piggybacking a small mechanical-switch driver on top of it, but not sure whether that is a modification that is accessible to you.

Depends on output voltage but I think AliX has some options, I searched 32mm LED driver, lots of the descriptions include SST90, so could also try that.

Need to confirm whether the 3 LEDs are in parallel or series…

Can you tell from this picture? I think they are in series but not certain.

Parallel config is probable since I see the PCB traces separated into inner (-) an outer (+) rings. But I am not certain.

Wow the factory reflow of the LEDs is godawful, every single LED is off-center, and by quite a lot. No wonder the driver failed so quickly…

I’m disappointed with this purchase. I only used it a few times and it quit working. I. Was hoping to find a new board to fix it and keep as a back-up. I’m thinking or just getting a new light. Not the same brand though. I’m looking at maybe a Malkoff. I don’t need it for work or anything. I just want a really strong light since I live out in the country a bit.

If you can find a driver, this light could be resurrected.

Malkoff is solid. Don’t get caught up with “most indestructible flashlight” hype, once you’re into the malkoff league (malkoff, surefire, etc) then there really isn’t meaningful differences between the brands.

If you just want a daily beater, Wurkkos is pretty popular around here. It’s 11.11 sales very shortly so probably some good deals available.
