I’m putting together a 15x xml light. All in series. I’m using 8s 18650’s and a hyperboost driver to power them up. I’ve just connected the power loosely (outside the host) to double check it works. All I get is spark when I connect the loose wire but no power to led’s (or at least not enough to power them). I have adjusted the trimpot both ways so it was low and high current but still no light. Can anyone help or make a suggestion?
A spark to me is either a short or simply a bad connection. I believe OL has used at least one of these drivers. It may pay to give him a PM if he doesn't pipe up here. Good luck. I'd love to hear what you think of the driver once its up and running.
Is there a short somewhere, and does the driver have protection against shorts?
Did you ever power the driver without the LED load? Boost drivers are notorious for frying themselves when there is no load attached. (Trying to push current through an infinite resistance load.)
Did you notice the spark when the setup was working properly. Might just be a cap on the input side.
Thanks I’ll keep OL in mind.
Definitely no short that I created with wires etc… I have triple checked. I didn’t know boost drivers ‘need’ a load. The first test was at default current which is 100ma which really isn’t much but I had the led’s connected, it should’ve survived right?
I just read the datasheet for the hyperboost and it does have an output voltage limit, so it should not damage itself even if there is no load, so no worries there.
What voltage does the output have when you have it powered? 80V would indicate an open circuit on the output side (damaged LED maybe?)
0V would indicate a short in the output side or the driver isn’t working at all. Try to measure the current in series in the output side for further diagnosis.
No current/no voltage detected on the output
