Interesting. The same upgrade seems to apply to the New LG G5. I didn’t see anything on Sony. But, they source their OLED panels form LG, maybe they will get it too ??
Sony top OLED model A95L uses Quantum Dot QD-OLED panel from Samsung. AFAIK A95L uses same Gen 3 QD-OLED panel as Samsung S95D, but without the glare-free feature. The less expensive Sony models might use WOLED LG panels, but I don’t follow these models closely so not sure.
Also worth mentioning, when I commissioned the new TV, I made sure not to connect it to the LAN or Internet, no matter how much it pleaded, because I do not want to feed Samsung’s ad serving, profiling and “automatic content recognition” spyware. Content is supplied by a pair of AppleTVs (one connected to my US account, one to my UK account).
Fortunately, apart from the setup pleading, Samsung didn’t interfere with plain HDMI switching, and HDMI CEC actually works quite well, unlike on my old LG C9 it replaced. I’ve read horror stories about TCL TVs deliberately disabling themselves and refusing to proceed until you connect them to the Internet to enable their spyware.
Are you talking about the 2025 model Sony panels? I just read that LG and (I think)Samsung have changed from their MLA (Quantum Dot) panels to the 4 layer design for 2025.
“Samsung is switching to a tandem OLED stack for their flagship S95F QD(??)-OLED, but with 5-layers instead of 4”
But they also say: “This means that the dreaded panel lottery is back, so on the S95F and S90F, you could get either QD-OLED or WOLED, depending on which size you buy and where you live.”
All very confusing. Rtings says as of 1/9/2025 "Sony hasn’t officially announced their 2025 lineup yet. " So I just wonder where they are going. With their potential suppliers dithering…
Oh I was talking about 2024 models. LG has WOLED only, while Sony and Samsung has QD-OLED (manufactured by Samsung) for top models , and WOLED for less expensive models.
Yes exactly as you quoted, this mixture of WOLED and QD-OLED by Samsung and Sony, sometimes same series might have WOLED depending on size, is very confusing. Only nerdy hobbyists know which is what, “normal” people likely don’t care.
2025 should have better/brighter panels as technology marches on. LG remains WOLED only (the G5 “four stack” panel), while Samsung should have mixture QD-OLED for top models and WOLED for lower. Sony we don’t know but I would think still same mixture as Samsung. Thankfully they won’t have QD-OLED larger than 77" yet so no buyer’s remorse for me.
I am not computer savvy (my profession has nothing to do with computer) and can’t help but feel a touch overwhelmed by who’s tracking me, who might be stealing data, what they do with it, etc.
I do connect my Sony A95L to the internet as I use the internal apps for all viewing. The plus side is it’s extremely convenient. I do not turn on auto firmware-upgrade though as those upgrades have been known to fix one problem but then cause another different, sometimes completely unrelated, problem. So hard to keep up with technology nowadays and it’s not getting any simpler.
To be fair, not one of the legal streaming box providers is trustworthy, not even Apple, which is a big advertising company now. Only those using pirated content have privacy nowadays, which is a sad indictment of the entire media business.
I wouldn’t describe it as psychedelic. The scene in question just takes place inside a house with improbably gloomy lighting. I’m sure that half of Cage’s face being in shadow was a deliberate choice by the director.
To categorize the movie by genre would be something of a spoiler
A little update. My PTs Sony that was having intermittent power problems - BB is going to deliver a replacement. No need to demo the problem. Gave him no grief at all.
My Sony decided to stop responding to the remote.
It would power on and off but would not do anything else on the home screen.
The normal power off just puts the TV into a kind of deep sleep mode.
Holding down the power button on the remote forces a reboot - as it were.
That fixed the problem.
So that is trick to try if your set is acting up.
Still it makes me a bit nervous that it happened at all.
All the Best, Jeff
Thanks for the tip. Just holding power nothing crazy like below? I’m overwhelmed by forever advancing technology.
Follow this procedure to reset the remote control to factory specifications.
- On the remote control, press and hold the POWER button.
- While holding the POWER button, press and hold the TV/VIDEO and VOL- button until the S indicator and all the Component Select buttons are illuminated.
- Release all three buttons.
NOTE: The S indicator and the Component Select buttons will turn off one by one. When all have turned off, the remote control will be reset to factory specifications.
I just held the power button.
So nothing happened other than a power cycle on the TV.
At least as far as I know.
Holding the button was just to see if anything would happen.
Didn’t consult any instructions.
Thanks for the reset info.

What timely post and coincidence. My Sony remote has buttons that could control the cable TV box, like channel menu etc., all of sudden stopped doing this a couple days ago. Today I decided what the heck let’s just hold the power button. TV went through power cycle, and now remote works again. These things are out of control complex and impossible to decipher.
That is a bit concerning. This was the brand-new B9?
I paid $180 to be on BB’s membership program (1yr) which includes service. It was cheaper than a true warranty and I figure if I have issues it will likely be within a year. Hopefully that gamble pays off. I normally skip warranties entirely but the A95L was so pricey I decided to hedge my bet a little.
Good instincts! The way I understand it, newer TV’s just hibernate rather than shut off normally. Holding the button forces and actual reboot. I had to reboot my X900F a couple of times over the years I had it. The issues were mainly performance-related though. That TV needed more RAM
Mine is a B9, 85". Got it last November.
My PTs 85 is spanking new B? He doesn’t know. It was a new years gift from his father-in-law.
He’s using with factory default settings and couldn’t be happier. Doubt he will ever screw with any settings.
He’s also got the baby Sonos sound bar, the little Sub, and a second speaker in the back of the room.
All the Best, Jeff
Maybe I’m just dense today. What does PT stand for in this instance? I’m trying and failing to translate that to a family member title or something.
You’re right, I never did reference it in my earlier posts.
PT is my Physical Therapist. Nice guy - can probably bench press me.
All the Best, Jeff
Ohhhh that makes sense. I was convinced I’d missed it. Thought maybe I even knew earlier in the thread and forgot
Yes me too. The “Total Tech” something right? I normally don’t buy warranty but this TV is too expensive and too big not to. I plan to extend the warranty for a few years also. Overall I think still less expensive than a 4 year warranty.
I still keep the original “box” but just can’t imagine packing this thing and send it anywhere for repair. Hopefully Best Buy will do the right thing when/if something bad happens.
Actually I’m thinking of tossing the box right now. I live in an apartment. There just isn’t a good spot to put it. Also, once the “straps” are removed it basically ceases to be a box. Even if I packed it all in as it came I’m not sure the box is really sturdy enough for repackaging.
Of course, if I had a basement or garage to put it in then I’d probably keep it just in case for a yr or two.
