How to Fix Nitecore TIP ?

Hello community,

I gave my grandfather a Nitecore TIP CREE XP-G2 S3 6500K on 09/18/2017.

Today my grandfather died. I found his TIP but it doesn’t really work anymore. The LED is very yellow and works very very weakly. I hold this TIP very closely.

I would like to repair it just like my grandfather would have done.

I think it’s the LED but I’m not sure… What do you think?

Usually the battery is the problem? Can you disassembly it and check the battery voltage?

I agree with LFB, it’s likely the battery has run out.

And they’re suggesting you check the battery voltage because if the battery has run too low it is dangerous to recharge it.
I’m hoping the TIP has protection built in to stop this from happening but i don’t know.

The TIP can be opened by removing the 4 screws that hold the casing together.

Understand it was your grandpas but it’s a light with a built in non serviceable built in cell and on board charger. They are throwaway lights when one or the other goes bad…

First thing you need to see if you can make sure the charger is working. I have a meter that plugs inline with the cord that tells me what amps things are drawing. If I had to guess I’d put my money on the cell has died. Nitecore has a limited lifetime warranty but if (and thats highly doubtful) they do anything they will just replace the light.

You might be able to replace the charger or the cell but you risk destroying the light getting it apart. It is what it is when you buy those types of lights. They have their uses but sometimes you just have to take it for what it is when they die.

But I doubt anything would be wrong with the light itself, as in the hardware. LEDs just don’t randomly “go bad” unless cooked. It’s likely the battery just aging and/or not holding a charge, or just not charging.

The connector could’ve gotten munged, dirty, etc., and not be making contact. Ain’t got a TIP, so no idea if it indicates that it’s being charged or if/when it finished charging. I can’t imagine it not indicating, so that’s the first step.

No charge? Swap cables to a known-good one (ie, one which has no problem charging something else). Still no indication? Look at the connector and try cleaning it with alcohol, pick out any pocket-fuzz that may be wedged in there, etc.
