Not seeing any button to add images. Perhaps a separate category, something titled “How to post images” or such could be created with how-instructions , and to also serve as a test page so other subject posts don’t have random, incorrect images dropped into them while users learn how to post pics?
I am testing how to upload a picture now, since it seems appropriate here. Yesterday while trying this new format out i was dropping in my imgur albums like i normally would, and it was showing a preview photo which i thought was really cool (i am NOT tech savvy, this whole layout is new to me).
ok, trying to post a pic. An old D4v1 i updated with auxilaries, new driver yesterday
But I see no way to add a YouTube Video.
All the old videos have turned into URLs.
We sure don’t want the BLF to waste the file space to store videos.
Anybody got a way to POST a video without trying to upload it to the server?
It now looks like the BLF server is hosting the uploaded images.
If this is true - we - as users MUST restrict file size.
To save on bandwidth and storage.
The CPF used to - and maybe still does - restrict images to 800x600?
Congrats on the nearly seamless transition,
All the Best,
Jeff
I love the ease of uploading images with Discourse, but yes, the added resource burden on the site from hosting and serving content is a concern. It might still be good to opt for links from image hosting sites due to this. Of course, then there is the issue of what happens if the image hosting site is no longer available…
As for adding youtube videos, adding a link typically embeds the video in the post if it is on a new line.
This is a upload from a huge image on my PC.
It looks like the software auto resizes it to 690x460
“DSC_2275**|690x460**](upload://vtrUoEUP2PA3V6hqajgBj66qFGy”
This - if true for all uploads - is a good thing.
And it works,
Still learning…
The old site was nice because you could specify a % of the screen to use for an image without having to know anything about pixel count.
All the Best
Jeff
D’oh Just noticed the size % option that shows if you hover over the embedded image.
After you select one, you can edit the text to reflect whatever you want. COOL! Second image sized to 62%
“[image|690x460, 62%](upload://mth6WG2KvJvM9UdatYu…”
So, if the software resizes the image to say 640x480.
If I edit the text so that the size to 320x240 (for example).
Does that save size on the server?
Hovering over the different images seems to indicate they are the same file size.
Just thinking many image rich reviews could save considerable room if this is actually a thing.
Actually some of those reviews with huge numbers of images - perhaps should be all linked to external storage instead of being uploaded…
All the Best,
Jeff
I don’t know for sure, but I think the forum software is applying transformations to the source image, whether hosted on the same server or from elsewhere on the internet. I rather doubt it is saving transformed images to the server, although it could have caching capabilities. Though now I’m just speculating.
On a desktop or laptop, you just have to post the image URL that ends in gif, jpg, png, or something similar.
The image might be described by the image hosting site as a “direct link.”
(It looks like webp images are not supported.) https://i.imgur.com/AKSlpM6.jpg
I don’t know how to post images with a mobile device.
I also haven’t tried uploading an image with the “upload” button yet.
Right mouse click on any image you’re viewing (browser, image editor, etc) and copy. You can then paste that image in the BLF site editor. BINGO. Presto add-o.
Yes, it’s very easy. It would be nice to keep in mind to copy the image link, not the image, when possible to save storage and bandwidth resources on the BLF server.
I tend to use Imgur or PostImages and link photos, as they’re easy to reuse in other places. I do appreciate the thought of keeping BLF stored images to a minimum. I wonder if sb could set some sort of hard limit to help mitigate potential abuse.
Been looking at image size of uploaded images stored - I assume - on the BLF Server.
Looks like large images are reduced to 1920x???. Then are reduced to about 690 pixels in the thread view. Makes no difference what I change the image size to in the thread. It’s still linked to the 1980 size.
If the image is portrait, the vertical pixel count can be quite large while being 1980 wide.
I found a few that are 512Kb in size. Which seems excessive for the BLF to store.
Perhaps the max size should be limited to 1980 in the largest orientation?
But smaller images are stored at their original size.
If I have an image that needs the resolution, I’ll upload the large version.
If a lesser res will do the job, I’ll try to remember to resize to something smaller to save server storage,
Or keep linking to external hosting sites.
Still learning…
All the Best,
Jeff
