“BOAAAAAAZ you Magnificent B&@! I READ YOUR BOOK!!!.”
Gen. George S. Nottapatton
Inspired, I just wanted to share my deeeeelight in vinyl records again. The album cover art alone is worth recollecting. In fact I bought two used record players, dug out some of the old high school days stuff and man did it ever flash me back to cruising the Blvd., Bob’s Big Boy, to taking a date to the Drive-In in my hot rod. Vinyls if you’re not aware are making a BIG comeback.
Now just check out the prices for some Beatles vinyl…….
True analog synthesizers are back. It’s about time!
For example, the sound track for Thor: Ragnarok.
Or a quick sound test I made a couple days ago. It’s very simple repeating pattern, but I used it to paint a rainbow of sorts, sliding slowly through different sounds and colors on a Microbrute. It’s so analog, the only way to save patches/instruments is to mark the knob positions in dry-erase marker. And even then, the sound will still vary depending on temperature and humidity and other factors.
Maybe soon I’ll have time to turn it into an actual song.
Cool. Nothing like analog warmth even ‘synthesized’. :sunglasses: I’ve even heard that cassette recorders are making a comeback. What next? 8-Tracks?
Btw that is some agitated “ear worm” grade stuff. I feel like running around the block, mowing the grass, and then meeting the wife in the shower. Forget the caffeine!
But regarding flashlights it APPEARS that the venerable Jacobs A60 is now back in stock.
I would be happy to see it back. It was one of my first high performance lights and helped thrive the night for a lot of us. An oldie but for the money what a goodie.
Toykeeper, that is an amazingly neat piece of music, test or no. Sounds like something that should be in a movie soundtrack or something. BladeRunner comes to mind, actually - some kind of ‘go find things’ part of the story.
Don’t hold your breath on this light…I too was excited when I saw that page but that light is MIA for a long time already, says GB, and nothing’s coming up.
Shoot I got kinda excited there that my ol’ friend is back. Heck it sez ships June 25-28 even.
PS. If it does have an aluminum reflector for that price it’ll sell out in a day. They are a real mod bitch to focus though if one thinks about changing the emitter from the stock XRE. They require the new emitter (like a dedomed XPE2, XPG2) riding up higher in the reflector to work IIRC. Not for beginners IMO.
Feel free. I’ll probably try to extend it soon to make it more interesting, but it won’t ever be exactly the same due to the analog nature. It’s impossible to do exactly the same thing twice with these things.
Mostly I was testing levels and general behavior along my audio chain after adding a new device… but now that it’s mostly working, I want to do more with it. Normally I have to make the instruments smaller, narrower, so there will be room in the spectrum for several instruments to play simultaneously at different pitches. But in this case, I only had two so I made one huge and rich to fill the entire space.
If I ever get a Novation Peak, I’ll probably do that sort of thing a lot more often. It excels at making sounds which are absolutely massive… especially when using its features for unison, detuning, reverb, and multi-octave arps. But my “Atmegabrute” is at least pretty good for deep growling basslines.
Takes me back to this groundbreaking album back in 1982 by Neil Young. Wasn’t a huge hit for sure to say the least. Took a big pair of kiwis on his part. :sunglasses: Great album cover art though.
The ironic ‘analogy’ of synthesis on an analog vinyl and the spectrum in between was a bit much for many to bear. Especially coming from his oft unplugged acoustic generation.
Blasphemy!!!.
I wonder if he still dabbles in it. After Geffen’s lawsuit prolly not.
