Inexpensive, no-nonsense flashlight for my older parents?

I’d like to buy a few flashlights for my parents.

Requirements in order of priority:

  • Inexpensive - let’s say $30 and below.
  • Easy, painless operation - no complicated UIs where they can end up in a mode they don’t know how to get out of.
  • Relatively floody - these are for finding things in the dark, power outages, things like that.
  • Side button (they may have trouble with a tailcap button)
  • USB-C rechargeable

Thanks in advance!

Hello. Welcome to the BLF community! A go-to recommendation here would be the FC11C. Make sure to get the FC11C and not the old FC11. The new version has a better LED and a more efficient driver. You can buy it at wurkkos’s official website or their aliexpress store. The flashlight costs $21.99 with a battery before any cupons. You can choose from multiple colors too. They are currently running their 5th year anniversary sale, so you might be able to get a good deal on it.

Thanks for joining the gang, bobbyb427!
I would recommend a compact Sofirn or Wurkkos flashlight with a side switch and one that’s USB-C chargeable.
Some of them have simple user interfaces, and some of them are dirt cheap.

Lumintop tool aa v2, ~$20, takes AA too but can use 14500.
If they can handle usbc, any of the $10-20 lanterns that have good run times.
Some lanterns take D batteries and very long run times.

ZMNT camping lantern on amazon, runs 300hr on low- can light up rooms on hi.

Personally, i have 3 wurkkos and would also recommend them. I also own the ZMNT Lantern have used more than a week for lighting(low to med) evry night without a charge. If you go with rechargeable, get a decent quality power bank(~20000mah, recc iniu) for recharging lights and phones.

I’m liking the FC11C, seems to fit the bill perfectly. Does Wurkkos use decent quality 18650 batts? Obviously I’d like to not burn their house down.

If they don’t, I don’t mind getting some without batteries and supplying some 18650s from my collection.

Appreciate all the responses!

It comes with 3000mAh battery whish is decent.

Yes, wurkkos uses decent batteries. They could have had 3500 mah instead of only 3000, but there are no danger at all using them.

I replaced my elderly mom’s with a Sanyo NCR18650GA (3500 mAh, 10A CDR) when I gave her the F11 a couple of years ago. There’s nothing wrong with the Wurkkos cell, but the less often she has to charge it up the better, and in a case where the power goes out, I want the light to last as long as possible. (I’d give her a BLF LT1, but she wouldn’t want one. Severely tech-challenged.)

The safest option might be a protected cell, that way even if something shorted out there is a safeguard.

Yup. I don’t use unprotected cells unless they’re IMR.

Off the shelf. I’ll stick with the regular FC 11 as it is available with 4000k or 2700k. I have given out plenty of them.

For me, I definitely prefer neutral white. For my parents… I don’t think they care :stuck_out_tongue:

A bit against the grain here, but if you can get hold of an Acebeam EC50 gen2, you’d get a Hell of a light.

Simple on/off side-clicky, micro rechargeable, though, decent floody beam, and bigger 26650 for an easier grip of they got arthritic hands, plus assloads of capacity. Price is a bit higher, though, but it’s worth it.

(Dunno the gen3 or how it’s different from the gen2. Maybe someone who has one can chime in.)

The side-button is sooooooo easy to press, almost no force needed. Silver, so easy to see where it is.

UI is simple on/off, hold to cycle through LMH. No blinkies, no shortcuts, no multiclicks. Simplicity itself…
