Interesting new LED tech from Nichia

Very interesting Caleb, thanks for the heads up.

Yes, thanks very much for this precious tidbit.

That is cool. Up to 90 cri doesn’t sound exciting though. Hopefully they get a large enough shift to reach from 5500K down to 2700K. That would be totally worth the cri loss.

very interesting news, thank you for sharing.

No info on how it works unfortunately

Here’s the Nichia press release:
http://www.nichia.co.jp/en/about_nichia/2019/2019_091901.html

Presumably by 2-in-1, they mean it has two dies of different CCT’s and an extra solder pad to control them seperately.

Their 757 format (like Optisolis) is already a 3030 sized emitter with 2 dies, but it has the phosphor layered over the top of the whole package. This must be at least a little bit different from that, but might be very similar.

Since several household lighting manufacturers are starting to develop products with variable CCT, presumably using multiple emitters, this looks like good timing for Nichia.

I suspect we won’t see this in the high power space anytime soon, so I’m not holding out hope for a tunable XHP35.

Yea Phillips have the fancy string light bulbs for sale here with tint dimming. You can see its a mix between warm and cool white LED strings.

If it is the common two dies in a 3030 led, but with different phosfors poured on top of each one, it is not exactly revolutionary. But I hope for something more fancy.

Nice.
Datasheet is already available:
http://www.nichia.co.jp/en/product/led_product_data.html?type='NF2W757G-MT'
Though this model is CRI80 only at the moment.

The datasheet gives the answer:

Yep, they said “up to 90 cri”, so I don’t think this announcement covers anything outside the range of 80-90 cri.
