Is there a UV thread?

… not specifically about the light itself but pictures of stuff you have lit up with UV light…?

I’m away from home at the moment and went for a 2 minute walk to a beach in front of our accommodation. In all honesty most of what i found was rubbish left behind by tourists.

Some completely natural things that did light up were spots in the rock (limestone) and some kind of weed, possibly a sea weed. Photos aren’t the best, they were quick takes with my phone.

What UV light are you using and does it have a ZWB2 filter for a lens?

I recently got Sofirn SF16 which has such a filter, and it makes all the difference - it cuts down on the visible violet/blue light that the UV LED emits as well, so if you see an object that the light shines on you know it is the UV-induced fluorescence, not reflected violet/blue.

Great improvement over the UV lights without a filter I’ve used before.

I’ve found some cool lichen that lights up. Also noticed that dandelions illuminate distinctly different than grass and poison oak / ivy tend to stand out among neighboring plants. No pictures though. Got a new cheap UV light that looks pretty good so I’ll test it out in the coming days…

Ah yes… scorpions.

A number of years ago someone on BLF posted pictures of their backyard using a UV light. It was filled with hundreds of scorpions. He then went around with a leather glove and picked them all up and put them in a bucket.

It was a bit horrifying. I’d never go in my backyard again if it had scorpions like that.

I have certainly reconsidered my choices in footwear when walking on trails at night…!

Ironically, when I was going to a friend’s wedding and made reservations to stay at a beachside motel for the day/night so I wouldn’t have to make a long drive home at night, I took a UV light to walk the beach and see what’d glow, hoping to light up any minerals, etc.

The only crap that lit up were plastic bottlecaps and other trash.

Closer to home, though, I found that opossums glow pinkish red, at least on their white fur, not so much on gray.

Why is the surround all red?

I had two different lights on it, a 660nm and 365nm. It really makes them stand out…!

What a great little light! IDK what size driver that takes, but I’d think about the convoy buck/boost driver to avoid voltage sag. Or switch the PCB to 3S and run a 12V driver.

Cool. I have a red led light somewhere. I’ll try that some time :+1:
